guys i have read and tried lots of various techniques of converting a dvd to a usable pda sized file
come on someone must have the definative answer
i can take a dvd and rip it to the h/d no worries
i can extract the main film with dvd2one
but then what , how can i squash down dvd2one`s output to a size of say 180 mb , for use on a pda
theres a few specialist pieces of software that say they can do it but so far i have had no luck with them at all , most just lock up , and wont play ball , surely with all the tools and compressors on this site there must be a way of doing the job without parsing and smashing and reinterlacing and .....well you get the jist
any thoughts guys , please

I suggest that you go to doom9's site: http://www.doom9.org and have a look at the guides for making DivX or XviD video.
Then, play around with the settings.
PocketDivx is probably the best program to use... if you have a PocketPC 2003 (WM 2003) then I strongly recommend this version: http://www.wincesoft.de/html/pocket_divx.html which has been updated and optimised for PocketPC 2003.
I've found that it runs equivalent sized video smoother and better using DivX 5 and PocketDivx compared to WMV8 or 9 and Windows Media Player 9 on the PocketPC.
I've only played with this a few times (generally, converting VCDs to DivX rather than DVDs but the idea is the same), but I find that DivX 5 using the "portable" setting, two pass, average bitrate for video at around 300 kbit/s for video to be quite good (make sure you crop all the blank screen from widescreen movies). For audio, I use LAME MP3 - mono, 22 kHz, 32 kbit/s --> it sounds great on the PocketPC speakers.
On my HP iPAQ 1930 (which runs a Samsung processor at around 200 MHz -- approx. half the processing power as a new X-Scale 400 MHz processor), I've encoded a short (about 6 min) DivX5 AVI file of the prologue from LOTR that runs very well. Basically, I only get a little bit of frame drop during the complex battle scene and the "fire" scenes where Sauron makes the one ring. If you have a higher end PocketPC, I'm sure it will be completely smooth.
A tip with DivX video for PocketPCs... make sure you turn off all additional features like psychovisual enhancements, GMC and B-frames --> they all make decoding the video that little bit more CPU intensive.
