  1. Posted this question on the wrong board, should have been here I think.
I've recorded home videos to DVD using a DVD recorder. I've archived the original tapes in their entirety, but I'd like to pull parts of these DVDs in to my computer to make nice edited DVDs with chapters, menus, etc. How can I do this making them MPG2 files (or avi) with an audio that is not AC-3. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  2. Rip the DVD to your hard drive and demux the VOB files. You'll have the MPEG2(video) and MP2(audio) streams at your fingertips.

  3. What do I use? How do I demux? Sorry, this stuff is pretty new to me. Thanks.

VobEdit or (less daunting) ReJig are 2 applications that's good for this task.

    What "AC-3 thing"?
Either the audio is in AC3 in the VOB: Convert to WAV with headac3he or...
it's in LPCM: Convert to AC3 with ffmpeggui or...
it's mp2: Convert with "any" audio editor (GoldWave) to WAV.
I'm not 100% clear on what you got and what you want...

  9. Hi, sorry to be so vague. You did hit the nail on the head with the first responce. The VOBs are in AC-3 and although windows media player and win dvd can play the files just fine, the programs I have to do editing and authoring cannot read AC-3. Your suggestion of headac3he is great, the only problem is when I go to the download site, it gives a page covered with characters and no download. I'm hoping in the long run recording these home movies to DVD first will be a time saver. As it is right now...this is taking forever to figure out. I couldn't even begin to do it without help from experts like you, Mats. I appreciate your time and help. Thank you.

Strange - it looks fine to me?!? Anyway, you can find it at www.doom9.org too.
