IMO if you want to backup your DVD movie collection then get a DVD burner. If however you want to backup or convert a VHS movie collection to DVDR or perhaps record from TV then get a DVD recorder. I have both and I suspect most here have both as well.

If you have another DVD player then its possibvle to use a DVD recorder to make a copy BUT it wont have any menus or features. I use my burner to copy DVDs, its quicker and better, and of course my DVD recorder to record films i want to keep and I use DVD-RAM discs all the time for its time-slip feature and for recording day-to-day stuff Im not bothered about keeping.
Id start off with a burner as they are the cheapest and then get a recorder if you so desire. -
I think Bob W has nailed it here. For backing up DVDs, the burners and associated software are painless, quick and very good. However, I capture a fair amount of TV, and using a dvd recorder has produced phenomenally better output than when I was using my ATI AIW 9700 for the same job. Not even in the same league, frankly.
