    Does anyone know if it is possible to take subtitles off an SVCD movie?

    If it's hard-encoded (i.e. a part of the actual video) then it's not possible (or rather, feasible). If it's selectable subtitles of either the CVD or SVCD type, then yes it is possible. I don't know the actual procedure, but I'm sure you can find a guide to convert the CVD/SVCD subs into something usable (format).
