  1. I posted this at another forum. Can someone help me

My harddrive space is limited right now, and my budget is zero, so I thought to myself, I have a 2 gb drive in an old computer (dx4 100mhz) and was thinking of installing it in my p2 400mhz, with a 6.4 gb drive already in it.

Do I just attach it, and let windows (98se) detect it and its that easy, or, will installing a second drive cause some kind of boot up problems? Do I need to disable stuff, jumpers?

    Help.

I'd put it in the secondary channel set as a master on the jumper if you don't have a burner

nope, no conflicts and windows will do the rest

    Hmmm.
Um, I tried to install it, but it didn't work... windows wouldn't load, is said missing kernel32.

I put the jumpers as follows: my current Fujitsu 6.4gb, which I want to keep as the master with jumper as SLAVE PRESENT (out of the following jumper choices: original master, slave, cable detect, slave present)

The other older smaller Quantum 2gb, I put the jumper to slave, jumper in storage position (out of the following options: master; slave; slave jumper in storage position; cabel select)

1st question is, if the older quantum drive that I'm currently trying to install still has win95 on it, will this cause a problem, or because it shall be the slave, it shouldn't matter and I can format it once its successfully installed?

2nd, I just hooked up whatever free ide cables were sitting there, I think both harddrives are attached on the same IDE cable - is that wrong?

OK, I just looked at it and what I have is:

On the Primary IDE is my first 6.4 gb harddrive

On the secondary IDE is my Acer CDRW

I also have a CDROM that goes into my soundblaster sound card.

Now where should I connect this 2nd quantum drive? And which jumper settings would I need?

OK, so starting again, here is what I have:

    Fujitsu Primary Master
    Primary slave NONE

2nd Master CDROM type 4 (is this my burner??????)
    2nd Slave NONE

I also have a CDROM hooked up thru my old soundblaster16 sound card (like the ide cable from the CDROM goes INTO the soundcard)

So, 1st, that secondary slave IS my burner?
and this new small harddrive should be hooked up to the secondary slave postion? AND is it ok, to have win95 still on that drive?

keep the 6.4 as master on the jumpers and the old one as just slave. nothing else.

Bung the old drive on the secondary slave BTW.

I think that's what I just did. And it said I had NO DRIVES! boot failure.

OK, question on those ide ribbons, it doesn't matter which pluggy thing I attach it to right? the jumpers are what's important?

OK, I'll try it again, but what about that win95 being on the old drive? no problem?

OK, I had my 6.4 as prim. master, cdrw as secondary master, 2.0gb drive as secondary slave and when I hit the power it said under drives NONE! and then boot failure. do those power cable to each peice of hardware matter? or is it just the primary and secondary ide cables and the jumpers that matter?

Can someone else help too? Cause I know more of you must have hooked up harrdrives b4.

I read an article that said I should avaid hooking cdroms and harddrives on the same ide channel if possible, why?

Also, many articles said I need to go into CMOS and do sumthing?

I have an ASUS 440BX chipset motherboard.

Why, when I install the second drive does my boot up say I have No Drives at all.?

  2. set your 6.4 as master on the end of the ribbon as it proably already is
then leave your cdrom/cdrw as master on the end of second ribbon
put your 2g as slave on middle of same ribbon as cdrom/cdrw
then reboot but enter into cmos by hitting delete at start of boot
when in cmos move the yellow select square down to the one under cdrom it will probablie say nothing installed when it is on this hit enter this should then change to your 2g h/drive hit esc hit f10 hit enter let boot finish now it SHOULD be there

Set your Fijuitsu 6.4 drive to Original Master
Set the 2GB old drive to Slave
Set your CD Burner to Master
CDRROM doesn't matter because it is in SoundBlaster.

Below is a diagram of how you should plug in your IDE cables to your devices.

  4. Um, those posts have conflicting info on them. One says connect the master to the END of the ide ribbon, the other shows the master connected to MIDDLE of the ide ribbon.

    Anyone?
