  1. I've searched the forums and the net for some help on this but to no avail.

The wife just bought me a JVC XV-S42SL which is capable of CDR/CDRW/VCD/DVD/etc etc...

I did my conversion from AVI to MPG and then created the VCD using Nero. So far, so good.

Tested the CD using Power DVD, NO PROBLEM, played well.

Popped it into the JVC. The sound was fine and smooth, but the picture was very choppy, almost like a poor frame rate. The picture is so choppy I've been unable to watch the flick.

I've tried burning the movie onto CDR (Maxell Black CDs and Sony Silver) and onto a CDRW and still no luck.

Are there some settings I should be using prior to burning these with Nero? Is AVI2MPG not the best prog to convert? Is it the bitrate and if so, how can I correct?

Thanks in advance for any advice, I do appreciate it!

  2. According to users of this player, you should have no problems using Nero to burn VCD's and it should play both CDR and CDRW media, you can check the information here:
    http://www.vcdhelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDname=JVC+XV-S42SL&Submit=Search&Search=Search&list=0

Now, since the problem doesn't seem to be the player, it might be in your encoding, Nero is very forgiving when creating a VCD, and a PC can play any format basicly, so if you can, please tell of the way you created the VCD from capturing to encoding.

  3. beaware that I have used NERO 5535 with perfect results tried to use 5540 and 5551 but each time i get skipping in my VCD's and SVCD's plus other problems also overburning porblems so I just stuck with 5535 and everything works fine.
Also notice some skipping and audio problems with movies downloaded from the net, but not the ones I encoded myself from source to MPEG2 or MPEG1.

  4. Sefy/Thxkid,

    Thanks for the replys.

Sefy, I had an AVI that I downed using morphesus. Using AVI2VCD. After my 16 hour conversion I simply tried to burn using Nero... Should I be using TMPEGinc to perform the conversion?

Thxkid, I've currently got Nero 5.0.3.8 on my system (I didn't realize I had such a dated version...). Should I upgrade to the newer version, or will this suffice.

Again guys, I appreciate both your help. I really want to conquor this bad boy.

    Heh

I got your problem all figured out duder... It's the DVD player. I have a JVC XVS-40 and it sucks ass when it comes to VCD playback. CD-RW's work not quite so bad, but most CD-R's are very choppy. The sound is great, but it's almost as if the video keeps on getting behind, stops, and then catches up. CD-R's with a very light, silver, or even black layer are just brutal to watch on my machine. CD-R's with a very dark green/blue layer aren't quite as bad, but still annoying. Try taking your VCD's to an electronics store and try them out on a multitude of machines. Both my parents and my sister have Pioneer DVD players and my VCD's look far better on those machines. I will have to live with my peice of crap until I can pick up a better player... One that does mp3's would be nice too Sorry for the bad news, but I doubt that there's much you can do.

  6. Man you're bumming me out, but I have read a few comments that on the XV-S42 (versus the S40) it can play VCDs without much problem...

Hmmm, I hope you're not right or this machine will be relegated to the cottage...

VCDimagerGUI is a nice package too. Simple, it works great and is far more compliant than nero. To top it off it's free. Check in the tools section.

  8. Snowmoon,

Thanks for the advice, I'll give that a try tonight!

Any other advice (CD brands to try, Bitrate settings for the JVC, etc) would be appreciated...

    Thanks again

  9. Snowmoon,

I just used VCDImageGui to create my bin file. Then burned with CDRWin at 1x. Im about to go give it a go.

One thing I noticed was that when VCDImageGUI finished it gave the specs on the file. It said the fps was 30 fps. Is that too fast and what may be causing my issues? Or do I need to do something else different? Bitrates?

    Please help.
    Thanks again

VCDimagerGUI should have CDRDAO built in for burning. If your burner is not recognized reight away, go to the website and make and educated guess as to which driver to use. My LG 12x8x40 was not recognized, but after looking at the site it was obvious that it would be supported under the generic-mmc driver.

30 is too fast. The mpeg should be 29.97 ( or PAL 25 ).

    Good luck.

  11. Snowmoon,

Thanks for the advice. I'll try it out tonight.

Could the problem be with my initial encoding from AVI to MPG? Should I not use AVI2VCD and try TMPEGenc? Could an improper Bitrate cause the problem? Or is the bitrate set when the AVI was initally created?

    Thanks again

  12. BlackWinterDay,

You were right, the JVC is a piece of crap! I went to tthe store and tested the VCDs on a few other systems and voila.

Since it was bought less than a month ago, I took it back to Future shop and exchanged the whole Home Threatre System. I've now go a Sony receiver and aSamsung M303 DVD that plays the VCDs (CdR & CdW) perfectly!

    Thanks for everyones help.
