  1. Hello all!

I'm new to the wonderful world of DVD recording, and am glad I found this place. I've got some questions I need to ask, and I'm hoping you can help.

A few days ago, I bought a Panasonic DMR-E50 recorder. I am now getting familiar with it, and am quite impressed.

I have a lot of VHS tapes I've shot at airshows and the like and would like to back them up on DVD, so they last forever. Here are my questions:

1.)I also have a Panasonic DVD-RV31K unit, and would like to play the DVDs I burn on the E50 on it. I have some DVD-RAM disks, which I know can be recorded on the order of 100,000 times. However, what I need to know is if the -RV31 can play a RAM disk.

2.) If it cannot, can the -RV31 play a finalized -R disk?

3.)Is there any quality difference between stuff recorded on RAM and -R? This assumes the same setting of course (XP-XP, SP-SP, etc.)

4.) Is RAM ever going to become cheaper? Right now RAM disks are WAY more expensive than -R. It seems foolish to do archiving on RAM, despite its flexibility.

Please note that my computer doesn't have a DVD burner, and I won't be getting one, so please no suggestions along those lines.

Thanks for any help you guys can give me!

  2. I'm afraid your Panasonic DVD-RV31K model is too old.

You can download the PDF manual from the Amazon Web site:

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005AR4L/ref=ase_couponsdeals-20/002-6416843-7367248

The Panasonic DVD-RV31K apparently can't play DVD-R let along DVD-RAM.

You might try checking out one of the newer Panasonic models:

    http://catalog2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ModelList?storeId=11251&catalo...tGroupId=11059

The prices of DVD-RAM and all other types of discs are falling gradually.

Check out the prices for DVD-RAM on the following Web site:

    http://www.meritline.com/dvd-ram-blank-media-panasonic-optodisc-mini.html

If you buy in bulk, you can get pretty decent per disc prices.

  3. DVD-RAM is great format most people look at it in the wrong way. use DVD-RAM when you want to redit what you capture on the PC. So for $30.00 dollars a five pack would be fine. whenyou fill the disc up bring it to the PC and edit. MPEG2VCR is a great tool to use an TMPG DVD AUTHOR. But you will need a DVD drive to read DVD-RAm I like LG you can buy one at www.newegg.com burn's ever format there is. But if you only need a drive just to read DVD-RAM a $30.00 dollar drive will do buy one at pricewatch.com also the cool thing about if you if you get the LG burner a DVD-RAM disc can be a hard drive I download all my software on DVD-RAM so if some thing happen's to my hard drive I can live with it. Also when recording with DVD-RAM you can also play and record at the same time.

Even my really old (second generation) Panasonic A110 can play DVD-R discs without any problem, let alone the newer generations of DVD players. Please check out the following link before posting misinformation:

  5. Synergy:

Thanks. I didn't know there was such a database around here.

Just so everyone knows, I WAS able to play the finalized -R on the RV31K, and it worked fine. It also worked on my computer's DVD-ROM.
