    hey everyone, 8)
the question is pretty self explanatory. ive taken home videos and on my comp. i view them as Quicktime movies. Im sure this is a very common post and i was just wondering of there is some kind of freeware out there that can let me convert my Quicktime movies into MPEGs . if anybody can help or give any advice, i would greatly appreciate it . thanks everyone.

Not exactly free, but the trial version of TMPGEnc Plus will give you 14 days to convert as many of them to MPEG-2 as you can. After that, you would either have to settle for mpeg-1, or buy the program. Anyway, if you do decide to use it, remember to get the QT reader plugin. Hope this helps.

  3. Yes, the freeware tool by Stoik - Stoik video convertor -
will read quicktime vid (you may need the "Quicktime Alternate" codec for it to read them. It outputs avi and mpeg. (it also reads wmv..)

Try a google search, or look here in the tools section.

That pretty much answers your question Zetti...go to the tools section of this site and get the plug in and install it. Then it should open up. Installing Quicktime and installing TMPGENC isn't gonna make it happen. TMPGENC needs the quicktime plugin to be able to read quicktime files. The plug in isn't associated with the quicktime software, it is merely something that allows TMPGENC to read quicktime movie files.

    Casey,

Is it the one under the name "Quick time alternative" ?

There's no explicit "quick time plug-in"...

    Thanks so much,

    Zetti

    Casey,

I think I figured it out, searched at TMPGEnc tools...

Anyway, got the QVP file, copied it to the TMPGEnc folder, still, it says can't recognize MOV format

    Any guess ?

    Thanks,

    Zetti

You may have to make the Quick Time Movie Reader the number one priority for this project. Just remember to put the Direct Show priority where it belongs when you're done.
    Hello.

  11. I/we forgot to tell you - some MOV files cannot be read by either the plugin or the stoik tool. It's to do with the way the audio is encoded I believe.

  12. Well, the problem most have with quicktime in TMPGENC is the sound. I have Quicktime Pro so it is not a problem converting the audio to .wav I dunno if there is another alternative to this, as I have had no need to do so. If you can extract .wav audio from the quicktime file use that .wav file in TMPGENC. And yes upping the priority of the direct show in the environmental settings in TMPGENC should help.

There is a teeny weeny program that will convert quicktime programs to avi. I think it is called mov to avi.

And I've converted by exporting out ... using Quicktime player.

And if the Quicktime player says it's locked [Once Upon A Time In Mexico Movie Trailer] ... no biggy ... Vega Video 4e ... converted it.

I think he meant you could get a code for it (substitute the word 'somewhere') for 'the place you downloaded it, after entering your credit card details').

    ok lacywest,
ive heard of this mov to avi thingy, but i havent done any investigation on it. ive basically got a few questions:
    1) Is there any risk of quality loss?
    2) If you can give directions on how to convert my .MOVs i would greatly appreciate it.
    3) After converting to avi, how do i convert to MPEG. is there like a program avi to mpg?

id just like to say that i am very happy and excited about the great responses to this post, so happy posting!

Load the Quick time reader into the plug in directory in TMPGEnc. Launch TMPGEnc and select Option-->environmental stting VFAPI and adjust the reader to it is the highest priority. Obce you are done, make the Direct Show priority the highest to avoid problems down the road.

Copy or move the "QTReader.vfp" file to your TMPGenc folder. I left the QT file at the default setting in TMPGenc and the Direct Show I moved the priority level to 2. If you have any problems you can raise the priority of QT higher. You can use the default templates or do some tweaking. I look at the resolution of the file/s I'm converting and that depends on whether I choose 352x240, 352x480, or 720x480. It doesn't pay to go to a much larger resolution if your source file is smaller ie 320x240. I convert all my files using the batch list. I then use TMPGenc DVD Author and load all my files in it by clicking on "add track" to add all the files. I create my menu etc. and save the output to my hard drive. I use Windvd to check the output and if it's to my liking I then burn the final product to a blank DVD.
    Hope this helps.

ok sorry everyone that i havent posted in some time its because my account was inactive for a while.
anyways, i did download the plug in and i moved it into my TMPGEnc folder. but now the problem is that when i hit the START button, it tells me that the file tmpgenc.exe cannot be found because its not in the TMPGEnc folder . now to double check this, i went to the place where you set the priorities and it didnt show the QTreader on the list , plus it said that the tmpgenc.exe could not be located . so wat i did was i manually checked my TMPGEnc folder and to my surprise, tmpgenc.exe was sitting right there ! i know i did something wrong , im not a genius like the rest of yall, so can anybody help me fix this problem. thanks.

I had similar problems when I had more than one version of TMPGEnc installed. If this not the case, you may want to do a reinstall, along with a system restore. Remember to reload your QT Reader file if you try this suggestion.

ok , im gonna reinstall TMPGEnc and restart my system with system restore , but what do u mean by reloading the QTplugin , because when i first downloaded the plug in, i used winzip to open the folder and i just moved it to te folder of TMPGEnc, should i just do that again?

Yes, just to make sure your reader is installed once you have restored your system.
