You say the disc has PCM sound, which is different from Dolby Digital. It still travels only through the optical slot on your player. I know that those newer SoundBlaster Audigy sound cards with the seperate In/Out boards have optical inputs. I've also seen some motherboards come equipped with digital coaxial inputs, but not optical so it doesn't help here. I'd say that instead of buying new hardware, you should use the analog RCA L/R outs with some higher quality cables. Then buy an adaptor that would convert the RCAs into a headphone type plug to go into the 'line in' on your sound card. The quality of your sound card would still matter here. My onboard sound card records like ass, so I bought a PCI one.

You still haven't mentioned anything about getting the video on the computer. If you already don't have a capture card, I'd say get an ATI All-In-Wonder because it simplifies everything and eliminates the use of that headphone adaptor thingy I mentioned earlier. Use an S-video cable to connect the video from the laserdisc player to your capture card.

This is the only way I know how to do it. I don't know too much on the subject so someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

  5. Be careful using S-Video, in the land of DVD, it is better, but with laserdiscs it could be worse. Only laserdisc players with good comb filters have good s video signals.
