  1. Using DVDLab 1.1 to make a DVD.

Ok, so ive 2 seperate video files, one is 640x480, the other is 480x480. I know the 480x480 isnt compatible for DVDs because DVD lab tells me so and ive haeard it here before. But it said it might not be a problem, so i tried it anyway and heres what happens:

The 640x480 video plays fine. But the 480x480 plays about 1 and a half times vertically. waht i mean is that the screen stop about 2/3 of the way into the tv screen (because thats the end of the video) and it begins again, as if the video was line up to play beside itself..so i really get it playing 1 and a half times, or 1 and 1/3 times next to eachother.

Now i know that i can use DVDpatcher to change the resolution so to speak, and when ive done that, my file plays like it does on my tv screen, except instead of having the video play twice, it just stops at 2/3 of the way through the sreen (bceause thats where the video file ends), but instead of having the repeated vieo, its just blank (black/green)

Now i dont know that it will look fine if i burn the dvd using that altered file, i dont want to waste a blank dvd, these things are expensive. So does the blankness on my computer on the patched video file mean that the DVD player will play it correctly and not give me that double screen (well 1 and 1/3) or does it mean its going to do that exactly and theres no difference whether or not i patch the file to be 480x480 or 640x480.

    Help apprecaited.

why dont you re-encode it - so its correct

    Resize them both to 352x480.

  4. How do i reencode it to make it "correct"?

I dont want to rezise both of them because one of them is already fine and looks good on my tv (the 640x480). so i dont see why id do that.

besides the reencoding (which i dont know how to do or much about), what can i do?

I suggested resizing them both because you said you are using DVDLab. I used DVDLab and it doesn't like mismatched frame sizes. One of your files is already a DVD legal resolution, and that's all well and good, but if you are not wanting to lose a lot of quality then resizing both to a smaller size will most likely give you better looking results than if you just left the one and enlarged the other. It's more work/encoding to have to do both, yes, but if your source is decent the loss from 640 to 352 will be negligible, whereas the other one will undoubtedly look worse if you increase rather than decrease the number of lines. Enlarging frame size with same bitrate you encoded before with will not give you better results than decreasing frame size and using the same bitrate....

  6. In order to do mixmatched frame sizes in DVD-Lab you better be using version 1.4.1 and the VMG authoring option. Otherwise your DVD will never come out right.

If you don't want to upgrade to the newest version or don't want to use the VMG method, then you need to re-encode all your videos to a common frame size, FPS, and audio format.

  7. So i checked out the multiple VTS deal with VMG menus in DVD lab 1.4, but it seems with that that i cant link to video files that arent of the same resoltuion from the same menu. What i want to do is make an easter egg, linked from the page where you can select which chapter youd like in the main movie.

the main movie is 480x480, the easter egg is 720x480 (i was wrong, not 640). I tried patching them both to be 352x480, but neither ofthem comes out right. The 640x480 one looks like its stretched out horizontally and doesnt have all the movie in there, and stops after several seconds, just doesnt play. The 480x480 one looks as if the right 1/3 of the screen has been cut off and overlapped with the left 1/3 of the screen.

I dont think i can use the multple VTS for what i want to do, but isnt there any way to fix these files so that theyre the same resolution, both DVD compatible, and so that they look right?

Thats your only option,if you dont want to do that then there`s nothing anyone else can tell you.

  9. I just went through this. I dont now if using DVD patcher to patch the resolution is considered reencoding it or not. If it is, what am i doing wrong, why are the video files turning out all messed up like i described. if DVD patcher isnt reencoding it, then what is and how do i do it?

using DVD patcher is like putting Toyota badges on a Ford -- its still a Ford under the Badges, but the next police who writes you a ticket will mark that you are driving a toyota (not that is going to get you anywhere)

to re-encode --- see guides at the left

  11. Thanks BJ, i get it now.

I see a bunch of guides about converting files, i dont see anything about resizing and reencoding. what programs/guides can show me how to do this/do this?
