  1. What DVD ROM drive would you guys suggest? I have a Lite On 163 and it rips pretty fast, but sometimes I record onto my Panasonic E50 and want to rip the disc to add menues and chapters and re-author the DVD. The Lite on does not read those discs and I do not want to rip them in the DVD burner. Any ideas for a ROM drive that will read DVDs made on a stand alone and still rip pretty fast?

If you are talking about *ripping* a disc you recorded yourself, there is no need to do that. Just drag and drop the files onto your HD, edit, author, and burn as usual. Once a DVD has been ripped, the data is decrypted.

As for your ROM.....that's odd that it won't read discs recorded on your Panasonic. I use a Samsung combo CDRW/DVD ROM drive to rip with, and I'm able to average between 6x and 12x rip speeds.

  3. Yes. I understand about the ripping terminology. But with this Lite ON ROM drive, I cannot recorded it in the Panasonic E50 and play it on the Lite On. Maybe there is firmware somewhere but I do not know where or how to get it.

Are you recording to DVD-RAM? Then you need a DVD-ROM unit that can read DVD-RAM. Liteon 165H or 166S can read DVD-RAM but 163 can not.
Some Panasonic and Toshiba DVD-ROM models can also read DVD-RAM.

  5. Has anyone actually used the Liteon 165H or 166S to read a DVD-RAM? The Liteon site does not indicate this capability for either drive. Any actual experiences would be appreciated.
