question about recording directTV broadcast

I just installed directTV and now I am confuse how to record the broadcasts to my computer. The problem is, I am using a directtv receiver box, and the channel on my tv have to be set to channel 3 and all the channel are controlled by the box. So, when I try to scan for channels, my capture card did not detect anything. The only way I can think of recording programs to my computer is by getting another box. Is tehre any way to get all the channels one receiver box? thanks

Your capture card software probably needs to be set to channel 3.

Your problem more likely exists in the selection of how the video is coming in. It's been a while since I used a program like WinTV but I think there is a setting somewhere in there for cable, line in, etc. Also if I'm not mistaken you might have to do something with your overlay settings.

It's difficult to help you without knowing the programs and capture card you are trying to use.

I can only tell you how my system is set up.

My coax cable is ran from the dish to the receiver, then comes off the receiver to a splitter. From one jack of the splitter, it runs into my capture card on my PC, then from the other jack on my capture card another cable is ran to a VCR (I have 3 VCR's set up in the circuit) then from the last VCR out to a different TV.

I have Pinnacle AV/DV capture card. I don't have to scan channels to capture, it just captures whatever comes through, so like I said, we would need to know what hardware and software we are talking about.

maybe you can use the box's rca connections and pc's video in/audio line in?

A satellite reciever can only process one channel at a time (unless something new is out). I use composite video for digital cable.
