  1. As the subject says, is it possible to convert a divx file to dvd and give it 5.1 sound (it has ac3 sound source). What tools would be used, is it easy to do and does it give good results?

  2. Is the AC3 sound source 5.1 ?
Then you can simpy demux it with VirtualDubMod.

If it's only 2 channels, where would you get 'the other 3' from...?

  3. OK, maybe I asked a dumb question, but did you really need to point out my idiocy using your first-ever post on the forum?!

  4. I'll ask a different question instead then:

I'm trying to convert a divx film to dvd. It's all going well with the video coding but I want to increase the volume of the audio. It's AC3 and I'll be using virtualdub mod or to extract it. Any ideas?

  5. He, I'm sorry, was only kidding...

You may have to convert it to a .wav first and then normalize it.. and then encode it again as ac3. But all this re-coding might reduce quality...

  6. haha, don't apologise I thought it was a bit dumb as I was typing it out!

So you don't know of a way to increase the volume using virtualdub mod or maybe tmpgenc dvd author?

No, AFAIK, there is no way to adjust the volume of an AC3 without re-encoding it, so its pretty much what what babiulep said, except you would have to extract it 6 seperate wavs using something like Headac3he. Then after cahnging volume, re-encode to AC3 with a proffesioanl level encoder that will accept 6 seperate wavs as input.

    Probably not worth the effort

As AC3 is compressed, the audio has to be decompressed before it can be altered in any way. (Like you can't edit a Word document in a zip without unpacking it first.) For a stereo/2 chan AC3, it's no problem - it can be converted to stereo wav, edited and reencoded back to 2 chan ac3 no prob, but for 6 chan ac3 (5.1) it's much more of a problem...
