  2. I saw some kind of patched driver (or such) mentioned on http://www.LordSmurf.com

It's a really great place for anyone with an AIW card - ANY version!

Be forewarned! Those hacked drivers only seem to work with older cards! I tried one on my 9700AIW and ended up having to reinstall drivers and MMC. Not too big a hassle, but definitely not what I was expecting. Make sure you have all your driver disks nearby if you try it.

get a Sima CopyMaster. It removes MV from your video signal.

  6. Macrovision is an artificial error inserted into the video signal (Line 21, if I remember right) that can be removed (generally) by the Sima device listed above, or a TBC.

  8. Possibly...

I have a Sony DCR-TRV120 Digital8 camcorder. I rescued it from the junkyard at a local electronics store. The tape transport was not working but the signal path still worked. I can pass any MV-protected signal through the input, output it via FireWire, and get a damn-near perfect signal. The camcorder happens to have a TBC built-in, and the repair shop parted with it for no cost.

Just an idea. Many shops junk this type of product when they fail, and Sony camcorders are notorious for LS Transport problems. I don't know how lucky you'd get in England, but it might be worth a shot...

  10. I had a MV encoded VHS tape that I wanted to be able to watch on DVD and ran into the same problem you did. The solution that I found was to use my video camera as the slave deck and that worked fine.

What version of Catalyst drivers are you using? Probably at least 3.x I would imagine. If you go back to version 2.5, the MV hacks for the drivers will work. However, the driver hacks do not help with the type of MV that messes with AGC, causing alternating brightening and darkening every 15 or so seconds.

Are you sure all your problems are MV related? The two ATI cards I have had were pretty picky about the signal coming from the VCR. That could also be part of your problem.
