  1. I have a new P4 system and want to capture DV from my Sony TRV 250 and would like to try the Firewire for capture. My PC does not have a firewire port so I was thinking about adding a PCI card for the job and was looking for recommendations.

    Thanks,

I'll stick with my past recommendation and say that most any modern Firewire card will do. Don't pay less than $20US or more than $50US.

  5. I also have a Sony TRV-250 and a P4 like you. I bought a firewire card and it works ok to get the movie but I can't send it back to the camera thru the firewire. Do you have this problem?

  6. It USED to be that you should get one with a TI chipset (so I did - the Pinnacle DV). But since then I've used a few cheap cards, with VIA and NEC (IIRC) chips. I've never had issue with any of them in Win2k or WinXP, with either my Sony D8 cams or my external hard drives and DVD+R drives. But someone with Win98 might be another story; I dunno.

  7. Sorry for my poor english, but let me see if I understood: the problem is the card. I have to buy a new one with VIA and NEC (IIRC) chips. Isn't it?

Get the cheapest one you can find that comes with a cable.

  9. anyone know what chipset the adaptec and ADS cards use? I'm planning to hook an ADVC-100 into one and I know it has issues with TI chipsets. also anyone can tell me what the difference is between 1394 and 1394a? I know 1394b is the new firewire with higher transfer rate.

I got me a adaptec 4300 3port firewire card and have had no problems with using my CANOPUS ADVC-100. In fact I was able to get a $20 rebate too.

I'm currently running WIN98SE and have no problems using a Adaptec card that is a Texas Instrument OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host controller.
