I mean the OS in general, nothing recognizes it.

I have had 1, count 'em, 1, HDD that was formatted straight out of the box, a Samsung 60 gig.

All others had to be rung up through BIOS, or Set Up, HDD detect, then fdisked, formatted.

You are asking a little too much of an OS. Not actually an OS, but the BIOS.

If you are running XP, I didn't check, others here have been advising to go to something like "Manage my Hard Drives, then format from there.

They are not formatted, they do not know what machine it is going into, 98 FAT32, W2k or XP, FAT32 "OR" NTFS, so what exactly do you want? To go to the store and buy anXP or W2k, or Win98, or Win ME, or a Linux, or a Mac drive, please check the box carefully, as we have a 15% restocking fee.

Plugging in 2 wires does not a computer guru make. How about the jumper? Sure you have it set properly for its position on the cable?

Go over the layout again, and this time RTMF, which translates to look at the big pictorial chart that comes with all boxed drives. If it's an OEm, from a show or somewhere, go to the maker's site and look it up. Full directions there.

    Cheers,

    George

  5. So it sees it on your desktop but not "My Computer"? Right?

On your desktop you have a "D: 2nd Drive" icon and it works but it takes 2 minutes to open?

I would thing your jumpers are incorrect on the back of the Hard drives themselves. If they are on the same IDE cable that is. Which OS do you have too? Also make sure you didn't bend a pin or two when you were pluggin it in.

    SMoke,

Win98, in the title of his post, I missed it too.

What the hell is "On my Desktop"? I don't have any drives on my desktop, they'e in "My Computer".

I'm giving up and going to bed, you clue him in.

    Cheers,

    George

    LOL I'm retarded.

He has short cuts from his desktop to his individual drives (I think). But they're short cuts to nowhere and that's why it's taking so long for the Win98 to "find them". Since they're not in "My Computer" windows has to search all day for them. I would set up your BIOS/CMOS and correctly and see if that works

i'm going with George on this one. Did you just plug in the drive and booted up? I don't know about others but I had to format my drive before Windows could recognize it.
    His name was MackemX

What kind of a man are you? The guy is unconscious in a coma and you don't have the guts to kiss his girlfriend?

  9. It NTFS formatted and apparently 98SE has a problem with that. I seriously dont feel its necessary to erase all the data on that drive just to get it to work with 98. Im using 2000 now but i still need a compatible sound card for everything to be ok.

  10. Win 98 can't access ntfs formatted drives.... You will have to re-format it to fat32 to make it work.

It certainly will do. As Thayne has said NTFS filesystem is incompatible with win98

Triple that gotta format it and lose it all.. Or slave it to a NTFS readable OS (XP, 2000, NT) to copy it Then format FAT32
