  1. Does anybody else own the Star Wars Trilogy on VCD?

I would like to know what anyone else who owns the set thinks of it...

Or if you do not own it, and would like to, you can purchase the set at the above link.

ps to mods/admins - The VCDs are not pirated, they are original VCDs made by 20th Century Fox and are supposed to be sold in Malasia. Also, I am in no way affiliated with AllVCD.com. I am just adding the link in case somebody wants them...

I've heard of the VCD version of Star Wars Trilogy and I believe they are legal. I know the VHS version is also available and I wouldn't be buying the Trilogy just yet.

I'd rather have the DVD version in two years time.

I own several movies in this format, VCD as much better than VHS and can be playable on the DVD player.

The image is in the middle as far as resolution goes. VCD isn’t quite as good as laser disk though and better than VHS.

Even though I can see the pixels, I still enjoy watching the VCD versions of “Black Hawk Down”, “Gladiator” and “Star Trek II".

If someone wants to buy Star Wars Trilogy on VCD can do so now without waiting two years.

  4. Aren't the Star Wars DVDs coming out in September?

And remember that the vast majority of the world doesn't Have a Wallmart store close to them! I have never seen a DVD for less than £5 anywhere - even pirate discs go for between £6 and £10!!

  5. I own the set, quality wise they are pretty good. If memory serves me correctly they are full screen and as the series goes through the quality of the movies gets better.

Nice packaging and each disc has printed covers and labels. When I recieved mine it came with a bunch of legal statements from 20th Century Fox, Lucas Films etc stating these are legitimate VCDs. My guess is they've had a few problems with Customs seizing them on piracy grounds.

I have this set but I don't like it much. It's the Special Edition one so it has the extra scenes in it that I never really liked. It's also full screen. Personally I'd rather own the LD collection over the VCD set. You still have to change VCDs halfway through each episode just like the LD but the LD quality is a lot better.

  8. Why dont they have commercial SVCDS? A 9-disc set or not. I'd buy that shit in a minute.

  9. I own this collection. Came with a very nice box, good jewel case artwork, and nice silkscreening on the discs.

Pretty good playback quality, too. But I got them for the 'Collector's' value and not for viewing.

That's what all those editions in LaserDisc format are for!

I agree. I would rather have Super-VCD and have to swap discs twice during the movie, if it means a "near-dvd" image quality, and perhaps even a widescreen version.

yeah... i think the packaging looks very nice, yet it feels cheap.
the cardboard box they came in feels like it will rip apart when i pick it up, and the piece that holds the disc cases has a rip in it (which i caused accidentally ) and the disc cases themselves are very cheap feeling. especially for Empire Strikes Back. for some reason disc one doesnt stay in and likes to fall out...

I do have a couple problems with playback of the discs. does anybody else?
There is an audio sync problem. Though i know this problem is due to my dvd player having difficulty with 25fps because my computer plays them fine.
and around 35-40 minutes through on ESBdisc one and ROTJ disc one, the image gets very blocky and pauses quite a bit. it looks horrible.
again, this problem does not occur on my computer...

i may get a "gold release" of the trilogy on DVD... i'll see how that goes.

ps- "gold release" is a slang term for pirated or bootlegged copy

i didnt hear that last part, what'd you say?

  15. I thought the slang term was "5 Star" Trilogy.

If the rumours circulating on sites like The Digital Bits and Ain't It Cool News are anything to go by then I would hold off on buying a bootlegged copy for the official release.

It is better to buy the legal thing.

    Exactly.

Especially with the quality of authoring of the Episode I and II DVD's have displayed.

On a side note, has anyone else noticed that you can no longer buy the Episode II disc. I read awhile ago on the internet something about the reason behind it but for the life of me can't remember the reasoning.
    Quote Quote
  18. I wasn't aware that you can't buy Episode II any more...

I was pretty sure I saw it at Target just a week ago...
but i wasnt looking for it, since i already have it, so *shrug* not sure if i actually did or not.

And... i wouldn't be paying for the Gold Release of the Trilogy. I know a guy who knows a guy who can copy LD to DVD-r. or something.

and i definately would be willing to buy the Trilogy when it's actually out on dvd. the most obvious reason is for the image quality. and also for better sound ( ? ) and extra features and stuff. perhaps new audio commentaries?

i think i heard somewhere that when they are released on dvd they will *sigh* be making further changes to the films. lets pray they do not replace Yoda with a CG version a la AotC...

There were some "gold release" SVCD versions of SW trilogy in Hong Kong ~2 years ago. Picture was transferred off japanese Laser Disc releases, but quality was so-so, IMO it wasnt any better than VCD would be, real disappointment

Much better quality SVCD version of the SW trilogy (of off same japanese WS LDs) were "gold-released" by some SVCD pirate group at that time as well, really excellent quality picture (for a capped SVCD).

  21. I own this set and it's suck's the VCD are very blocky. There oh ok if you have no other way to watch Star War's I do own the Matrix VCD and it's a very good encode of the Matrix. If you have a DVD recorder or a Capture card on your PC like a ATI AIW. Use a ATI AIW for VHS with video soap. Or go to www.ebay.com buy the laser Disc and record your own DVD or VCD's. I also have the same VHS set and the VHS set is better then the VCD set.

  22. Let me say this on my Sony DVD player that's about five or six years old the VCD's look muddy I just pupped them in my APEX and the color is alot better. I would say after watching them on a better DVD player. The VCD set is better but they are blocky on action seen's not all but some. I think the color is better then the VHS set but the VHS set has no picture problem's that come with MPEG 1. In some way's picture is better on VHS and in some way's picture is better on VCD. But after watching them both I would buy the VCD set. This is the best place to buy the set they make the VCD and sell them to other VCD seller's. Still think the Laser Disc are the best bet to go with ebay you can get them cheep and get a used Laser Disc playerr.

  23. Read this review http://www.theforce.net/rouser/reviews/vcdtrilogy.shtml

keep in mind whenI said the VHS look's better I have a very high end VCR Panasonic that I bought for $900.00 that has noise reduction. To clean up the picture. So all and VCD set is good.

  24. One other tip if you get this set on some DVD player they might be picky on the APEX they lock up if you fast forward. They put alot of copy protection on these VCD's. You need cloneCD to make a back up copy.

I used nero to backup mine.

  26. I used Nero to backup mine as well.

My Philips DVD711 has a problem with the first disc of Empire Strikes Back in that it skips the last 5 minutes yet if I put it into another DVD player then it has no such problem.

There is no copyright protection on the discs, other than the Stop Piracy logo on the case.
the copies play perfectly, if not better than the originals, on my dvd player.

And i am very happy with how AllVCD.com got it to me.
it came in a specially made protective cardboard box, which was inside a padded FedEx envelope. i spent about $36 (including shipping) and had to wait only one week for them to get to my house.

spiderman2k1 - why would you even think of owning The Matrix on VCD instead of DVD?? that makes absolutely no sense at all, regardless of the quality of the vcd transfer. i just dont understand why you wouldnt get it on dvd instead.
