I'm relatively new to this stuff ... ya, like you haven't heard THAT before. I've tried searching for this particular issue, but to be quite honest, I have no idea how to phrase the queries.

My issue is represented in a screen capture HERE. [Image removed as issue has been fixed]

It's a double image of sorts that is clearly visible when viewing my videos on the pc. It only happens with motion and I can't figure out why it's happening all of a sudden. My previous setup [ATI TVWonder Pro PCI + ATI Radeon 7500] never had 'problems' with recording smooth video. But my current setup [stated in subject line] results in this weird motion thing. My recording settings are just about identical to my previous setup, except sometimes I like to use the VideoSoap option to have cleaner looking mpegs to work with.

Now, let me just state that I HAVE followed lordsmurfs guides for mpeg capture and AIW cards. When I record my shows I never have reported dropped frames. I have tried changing my settings in the MMC recording options to their default values [as I never had problems with them in the past] and I still get this issue. It's not particular programs either ie animation vs live footage. I've tried changing the bitrate higher and lower with no change in results. I have also tried changing the GOP structure to see if that had any effect.

This issue is apparent in both mpeg1 and 2 recorded files. At first I was thinking maybe the VideoSoap option being enabled had something to do with this issue, but turning it off doesn't change it at all. SO can anyone help me pinpoint the issue here?

One of my 'hobbies' is recording the Simpsons for viewing on my HD until Fox gets it's arse in gear and releases more of the series on DVD. Generally I record at 320x240 in mpeg 1 format, edit the commercials out with Womble Mpeg Video Wizard, clean up the capture in TMPGenc, then encode to WMV at 320x240 to get the episodes down to about 80MB each. It may not be the best final result, but it's perfect until the DVDs are released for viewing on the PC alone. It's just that this issue is rather annoying to me now as it never happened before.

NOTE: Image link above WILL be deleted once a working response is posted in the thread. THX in advance.

  2. Uncheck "Keep high resolution display during capture" in the MPEG preset, or else MMC will captures at high resolution, then scale the picture down to the capture resolution, blending both fields in the process (I'm assuming you're only having this problem with XXXx240 captures).

Thanks Sulik, that seems to have done the trick!!

Now a further question. As my settings in MMC were written down before installing the AIW 9000 Pro, including the "Keep high resolution" setting ... why didn't this happen before with the TVWonder Pro PCI? I mean, it was enabled before and I never had this problem. And before I could only capture at the half height settings. So for my purpose of capturing for viewing on the PC I left the half height setting as is.

Is the rage chip all that different? Not that it REALLY matters, as the issue is fixed now, but, just for my info.

I will do further testing with full height later on, but yes, these were always captured at the 240 setting.

ATI MMC 7 and 8 worked differently. The 8.x will blend field (known as blended, double, or merged deinterlace).

  5. I don't have a TV-Wonder, but I believe it may have been limited to x240 capture resolution, in which case the "keep high resolution display during capture" setting didn't do a thing.
And, as lordsmurf pointed out, MMC 7.x and 8.x behave totally differently, so that may also be the difference.
