next time you burn a dvd ..

Jacket Pictures are specially prepared Mpeg 2 video stills, which reside in a folder called JACKET_P on the root level of your DVD, along with the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders. Their purpose is to display a still of your choosing on the monitor, instead of the player manufacturer's logo when your DVD is in the stopped state.

It's alot nicer to have your custom screen pop up when the viewer hits the stop key on the remote! Your clients will sure be pleased you can do that for them (don't forget the extra graphic design fee :-). Also, be sure to tell your clients not all DVD players support the Jacket Picture feature. Still, most Hollywood DVD's include them. So, now you can too!

Please note: the tutorial assumes PAL standard video dimensions to input the various Jacket Picture sizes into the Mpeg 2 encoder. Please be sure to adjust for NTSC Jacket Picture sizes (which are listed at the beginning of the tutorial), if that's your TV standard. Have fun!

  3. B_JM's link to the tutorial is a good tutorial. However, if you are blessed and own Scenarist or DVDMaestro an easier way is to set up a dummy compile template.

Rip a vob thx and demux it and use it as the movie video and audio.
Set up Scenarist or Maestro as you normally would for a movie.
Keep all of your dummy files in a folder called "jacket". Use this folder to compile your dummy movie into and keep it as a template.

Next time you just want a jacket for your dvd's just paste the location of your still picture file into the jacket setups of Maestro or Scenarist and compile your dummy movie.

Just select the JACKET_P folder Scenarist or Maestro has created for you into your burn program and your done. Works everytime and takes a couple of seconds.

I've been able to make the images just fine with photoshop on a pc. However when I veiw the jacket picture on my Sony DVD player the image is pixellated. What dpi resolution is best to use for the image. I used 300dpi.

  5. The DIP does not matter. The dimensions do.

I assume you view the large picture when you push stop.

I believe this should be 720x480 (NTSC).

You should be able to preview the file (the one you put in the Jacket_P folder) on your pc. This might not work due to codecs, etc. From this preview you should be able to find the dimensions.

What Photoshop dimensions do you save as? What software do you use to create the jp file?
I mean it in the nicest way.

  6. Can someone help me with burning Jacket_p images. I've created them using either Maestro or tmpgenc/quicktime and burned them with nero 5.5.10.x but they never seem to work. On opening Nero, I just use the wizard to create a new DVD-movie, create a folder called JACKET_P in the root of the DVD and copy the necessary files into the folder. I'm creating PAL dvd's so the images I use in the case of Maestro are 720x576. Maestro sorts out the sizes for small. medium and large.

Testing the dvd in the player (Toshiba SD600E) results in nothing being displayed when the film is stopped.

The player does display JACKET_P images as I've tested it with Rollerball 2000 and Black Hawk Down (Both were Region 1 NTSC).

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Cheers

  7. If the NTSC JPs were not from home made discs, I'd pull them off and put them on a sample film. That should determine if Nero is the problem. I have used nero to make JP discs with no trouble. Can't recall the version #.

I see serveral possible points of problem:
    - Creation of JP files
    - Player does not like PAL JPs (I've read that these are not common. Don't know)
    - Disc Creation (could eliminate this with the test above)

I've found that my sony changer does not always like JPs if they are not on a full disc. Strangely enough, if I pad the disc with junk, it's ok.
I mean it in the nicest way.

  8. I'm new to posting messages in a forum, so please bear with me.

I've been trying for weeks, without success, to create Jacket images for my DVD-Rs. I've followed the various tutorials in these forum pages, but everytime, no luck; I'm not sure where I am going wrong. I'm using the following hardware and software:

    DVD Writer: LG GSA-4040B
    DVD Player: Toshiba SD-1800
Software Used: Scenarist, DVD Maestro, Nero 6

I've tried using the various DVD formats within Nero ("DVD-Video","DVD-ROM-UDF 1.02", "DVD-ROM-UDF/ISO"), to see if that would make a difference, but none have worked yet. The closest to success I have gotten is hitting the Stop button to view the Jacket image, but the video just freezes and locks up my DVD player, forcing me to reset it. Other times the burnt DVD-R wont even load. I'm sure the procedure cannot be this difficult, I must be missing something. The desire to have functioning Jacket images on my DVD-Rs is strictly cosmetic, but at this point I'm almost ready to give up. If anyone with the same hardware has had more success than me or if anyone else can shed some light on my problem it would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks.

My Toshiba does support Jacket pictures because I've seen them work for my pressed DVDs [ie. LOTR-FOTR Ext., LOTR-TT, Crouching Tiger...(Superbit)], but I have yet to see a burnt DVD work with Jacket pictures. I'm wondering if my Toshiba just has a problem with displaying Jacket pictures from burnt media. I have tried TDK 2xDVD-R, Mitsumi 4xDVD-R, and Memorex 1xDVD-RW, none have worked as of yet. Does it make a difference which disc format you choose (ie. DVD-Video,UDF,UDF/ISO). I have used Nero's "Disc Info" feature on a pressed DVD to view what format it was; They all said UDF/ISO but when I use Nero to burn a UDF/ISO disc, none of them work. If anyone has had success creating functioning Jacket images for a Toshiba DVD player. Please, let me know how they, (Jacket images), were created and how you burned the DVD (ie. UDF, DVD-Video, etc.).

    Thanks.
