I recently purchased my first stand-alone DVD player. However, I noticed that when I play a widescreen (or full screen) DVD movie in letterbox mode on my conventional 27" Samsung television, the sides of the picture are cut off (without engaging the "zoom" feature). By playing the same DVD on my computer and comparing the image with what I saw on my TV, I was able to determine that approximately 11% of the image was cut-off on my television. Is this normal?

Another problem with my new DVD player is a disturbingly loud hum on the audio output (which is connected to my stereo). The hum gets softer when I turn my television off, and it disappears when I disconnect the television completely. I would appreciate guidance on how I may silence this audio noise with my television connected.
