  1. At futureshop, the Maxell DVD-R media (red packaging) is going on sale: 5 pack for 10 dollars. The Staples Maxell (Blue and white packaging) is: spindle of 25 discs for 29.95.

What is the difference between the 2 maxell discs? which has more relibility/compatibility?

Check the "Made In" label. Look for made in Japan.

If it wasn't made in Japan, there's a high chance you'll be getting Ritek media.

Sorry for the late reply on this one, but I caught it in a search and it's actually something I"ve been looking into myself.

I am assuming you are from Canada? (Brampton Ontario myself)

The red/orange package Maxell are 2x dvd-r media.

    The Blue/White package are 4x.

The red package 2x's have a media id code of MXL rg01, while the 4x blue/white have id: MXL rg02

I like the reds better, for purely cosmetic reasons (both have a purple dye layer, but the 2x's label is a neat "Misty" blue tint. They really look nice. The 4x unforuntately are some god awful pastel bananna yellow with no "tint" (just a solid colour).

I got my 2x at futureshop pre x-mas for 2$ a disc. (CAD) They are now selling at that same price online (15 for $30),, presumably to clear stock, since they are likely no longer being manufactured.

I've since seen the 4x on sale at wallmart for 2$ a disct (5 for $10). So if this price holds, it would seem that there is no good reason to go for the 2x discs. It's really a shame, because I absolutely LOVE those labels (most attractive cdr/dvdr label sides I have every seen, that still remained professional looking and provided ample label space). But I can't justify burning twice as long for purely cosmetic reasons

The discs seem fairly equally compatible (both excellent quality). In the little bit of testing I did, there was one old Compaq DVD-rom drive that wouldn't recognize the 2x but would recognized the 4x. Odd. So the 4x might have a very *slight* edge in terms of that. (The drive balked on any rw's and memorex +r's, the 4x maxell was the only thing that worked, and it was quite the surprise)

Personally I think I am okay paying 2$ CAD a disc with the guarantee of high-quality media. We canadians don't have much choice when it comes to great dvdr deals, any benefit of buying from the US is typically absorbed by the exchange rate and shipping costs.

So $2 for Maxell -R and $2 for Memorex +R is the best deal I've found so far (and that can be had at local futureshops and walmarts).

But I'd definitely appreciate hearing from anyone whose been able to find any better deals than that

    Aggies

Are you sure about that price? Last time I checked (today) they were $53.55 for a 15 pack at Staples. Can't see them ever being as cheap as you mentioned.

I have the pioneer a04 drive.which is apparantly rated for the 2x media. The red 2x burns at 2.7, while the 4x burns at 1.3. Go figure.. So, until I upgrade my drive, the 2x is better for me

You do. Go to College and Spadina's computer alley in Toronto or www.PacificmallToronto.com I guarantee you'll find better deals on quality DVDR media than you assume.

Just be careful of the fakes! These places are rife with them.

Indeed, many are. But some of those businesses are pretty legitimate. Complete with return policies. Filtech on Spadina has been quite honest to me about the media they sell. As have a certain PC outlet at the Pacific mall. I'm now pretty adept at spotting most of the fakes. But thanks fo the warning.
