I have a 27-inch HDTV monitor and an obscure progressive-scan DVD player. I was really impressed with the improvement to the picture after switching from interlaced to progressive mode on the DVD player.
The DVD-player manual says nothing about the player having 3:2-pulldown. But, I really can't imagine any progressive-scan DVD player would actually send telecined output to a monitor....I mean, in the case of DVD media, pulldown is just a matter of ignoring the telecining flags (no complex analysis involved)...So, is there really such a thing as a progressive-scan DVD player without 3:2 pulldown?
If there are actually progressive-scan players without pulldown, I would like a surefire method of knowing if mine is one. I would think that I just need to put an NTSC DVD in the player, and then use the step function to go frame-by-frame in a motion scene...without pulldown, 2 of every 5 frames will have interlace artifacts...is this correct?
However, I know that HDTV's have all kinds of fancy combs and filters, etc, that might actually mask the interlace artifacts through some sort of deinterlacing...is this true?
How can I tell for sure?

I hope this helps now I have a denon dvd changer (the 1805) and the panasonic E-80H now the denon has the farouda chip which is a pure ddci silicon chip which has true progressive scanning. Now when it comes to the panasonic it has progressive scanning but its not true 3:2 pull down while the denon does have it,So the bottom line is you get what you pay for if you purchase a cheap dvd player you will not get true progressive scan for $59.99 but only in top of the line dvd players I hope this helps

louthewiz,
I would wonder though, if you see a difference between your two dvd players when stepping frame-by-frame through a high motion scene...
I'm seeing 3:2 pulldown listed as a feature for quite a few dvd players - even inexpensive ones as cheap as $70. But since 3:2 pulldown is (it seems to me) so easy to implement, listing it as a feature may just be a marketing gimmik.
