Hello all,
I've been trying to backup my copy of "The Godfather 2". This is what I would like to do:
1. Extract both DVD to my HD
2. Combine both movies to make it complete(no pause between disks).
3. split the movie to two disks and compress.
Set 1 is easy. I used DVD Decrypter in file mode and extracted both disks to the HD.
I've used both VOBedit and VOBmerge to try and join the .VOB's.
Then I use IFOedit to create new IFO files.
All seems to go good until I get to this part. When I fix the ifo files, there are 4 subitles when there is only supposed to be two(Englis and French). When I use VODedit the overall length of the movie is incorrect. 4 hours instead of 3 hours 20 minutes. If I use VOBmerge the overall lenght of the movie is correct but IFOedit will not allow me to split the movie where I want to.... 1hr. 40min. I select that point but when the process completes, the first disk is about 35 minutes long the the rest of the movie is on the second disk.
What I am doing wrong? What can I do differently? I've searched the forum but it seems like most people want to combine it to one disk. I am not interested in menus, etc.
Thanks in advance,
Mike

you could try reauthoring with dvd shrink.
add the files you want, choose no compression.
this should join the two movies without any pauses.
then take all those files and import them into dvdfab.
choose split to 2 disks.
or
import the new files you created with dvd shrink, back into dvd shrink and use the start/end to split the movie where you want it. -
I used this to combine both disks of "Gangs of New York" to one with very good results:
First you need to extract the .vob files using something like DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink, then use DVD Shrink to compress them to a size that will fit on one disk. I haven't tried it this way yet, but you could probably use DVD Shrink to do both steps at once.
Then I used these steps provided by Megahurts:
"Delete all VIDEO_TS files and rename all the disk 2 files and move to disk 1 folder as such.
VTS_01_0.BUP (disk 1)
VTS_01_0.IFO
VTS_01_1.VOB
VTS_01_2.VOB
VTS_02_0.BUP (disk 2)
VTS_02_0.IFO
VTS_02_1.VOB
VTS_02_2.VOB
3 Run DVDToolbox, source = disk 1 folder, click 'Create video manager (VIDEO_TS.IFO)'. Takes about 1 sec. Close DVDToolbox. "
The only difference was I had to use DVDFab instead of DVD Toolbox to create the video manager file because my version of Toolbox didn't have an option for this. Finally I created the disk with DVDToolbox.
The key steps are to:
1. Rip the DVD
2. Compress the files
3. Rename the 2nd disk files
4. Remove the VIDEO_TS files
5. Rebuild the Video Manager files (VIDEO_TS files)
6. Create the new disk
How you do this depends on what software works best for you. It's also clear that there is more than one way to accomplish this, but this produced good results for me.... -
hmm, i don't think he wants to combine to one disk.
sounds like he wants to join the two sides and split at a certain point. -
I guess I misread it. I need to go to bed

After I sent my post, I did some more reading. It appears that DVDSHRINK can do more than what I thought it could. Here is what I did.
1. Used DVD Decrypter to extract each DVD to seperate directories.
2. Opened DVD Shrink (in RE-Author mode) and loaded in the first disk.
3. I used the "Set Start/End Frames" button and set the end of this disk to the midpoint of the movie. Then I compressed it to fit on one disk. about 80%
4. Ran deep analysis and "Back-up"
for disk 2 I did the follwoing.
1. I started this disk with the remainder of the previous movie.
2. Added the second disk of the movie to this disk.
3. I compressed it to fit on one disk. about 80%
4. Ran deep analysis and "Back-up"
Then I loaded IFOedit and created images of each disks so I can burn it with DVD Decrypter.
Out of curosity, I played the DVD (from HD) with IFOedit and it played perfectly. It played chapter 4 of Title 1 and went directly to chapter 1 title 2. So far so good.
Thanks,
Mike
