well I know that when I upgraded my philips dvd711, from firmware 7.12 to 7.22 that some of the vcd discs that I couldn't fast forward or rewind with, without having the movie flipout. I could ff and rr without any problems after the upgrade. It also took care of a couple of quarks that I had such as after playing a dts movie I would have to shut the player off and back on to access the menu again, after the update majority of dts movies play fine now. Except emperor's new groove which still flips out if I play it in dts.

    hope this helps.

the 7.22 firmware update is for all these players:
    DVD701
    DVD711
    DVD750
    DVD751
    DVD755
    DVD756
    DVD865
    DVD931
    DVD940
    DVD950
    DVD955
    DVD956
    DVD957
    DVD958

basically all the players to the left of the firmware 7.22
are for that firmware. All the players listed above use the exact same firmware, its the code of the player that distinguishes the features that the player uses from the firmware.

or here is the direct link to the download:
    http://www.ianc.net/philips/rev722.zip

    Instructions: You need to burn a CD-R in Mode 2 CDROM-XA ISO9660 which contains the files "xxxxxxxx.xxx" and DOWNLOAD.02A" only (where xxxxxxxx.xxx are numbers which represent the version and revision of the firmware). Also, make sure that you finalize (or "fix&quot the CD-R. Once you have done this;

    1. Switch on the player and wait for initialising to complete The display will read "No Disc".

    2. Open the drawer, insert the disc and close the drawer. Do not press "play".

    3. The new firmware will load automatically and, when completed, the drawer will open once again.

    4. Remove the disc and close the drawer by pushing gently on the front edge. Do not use the "close" button.

    5. Switch off the power and then switch on again.
    Reprogramming is now complete.

    hope this helps out.

not that I could tell, supposedly it adds the ability to play mp3 discs, but when I tried it after the update, it recognized the disc as a vcd, then said disc error. So at least with mine it didn't add the ability to read mp3. otherwise, I haven't noticed any differences other then fixing the whole dts thing I stated earlier which could have been just with my player.

also to find out what firmware you already have on your player, turn on the player go into setup, go to the last menu selection with the access control, status window, etc.
scroll to the bottom of those sub menus when you get to pbc, hit down one more time as if you were going to scroll to another menu selection. The firmware version should show up.

    have a good one,

hey I guess I did notice it seems to play svcd and vcd a little better and crisper, but then again that could be a placebo effect as well.

another quick thought, I've run into the ff and rewind thing if the pbc is on, you can turn off the pbc off in setup and see if that corrects the problem, if you are still having it after the firmware update, I leave my pbc off just because I really don't care for it.

    have a good one,
