i've always wanted to know the difference between the two and unfortunately the glossary here gives repeats the same thing for both, so can someone just give me a brief definition of each?

see section 4.3 of http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html and it will provide some defintions. The biggest practical difference in in compatibility of burners, media and players - some are one, the other or both...the DVD players section here lists compatibilty - the main thing is to make sure (to the extent possible) that you burn in a format the player will be able to read...
