It worked a few months ago but then it would not burn DVDs it will not recognize RW+R and did not find dvd-R until today. The CD operations work fine. 1st the storage support said it was bad media until I told them I was using Sony media. 2ndly the drive check software I downloaded from Sony storage supports hangs up a lot.

I looked in a lot of help places on the web, while I saw no clear solution I saw hundreds of post with people who have this problem and been through many of the things to try to fix it. Please help. Here is the point I am at, while the last thing I was told to do is to install XP home service pack 1 and the CD is still in the mail, I have seen others who had done that step too are still looking for a solution.

1) Next they had me change the unit from slave with my hard drive to Master on IDE channel 2 on its own lonely ribbon. Restart.

2) Then they had me remove any burning software. amoung the bundled, MyDVD and Record Now. These 2 programs have such a problem being removed by uninstall that they have special instructions. You have to delete files and remove items from your registry. I had 8 registered programs including Nero 5.5, DVD X-copy platinum. (No Roxy and no EZ-CD). I took every reference of any of those programs out of the registry.

3) They had me remove checks from use this drive to burn CD'S in advance setting of the drives properties in the device manager. In 2 places one the properties of the Sony drive under CD DVD devices and the other I cannot recall. They said when I uninstall the DVD Drive and let Xp reinstall it back the DVD unit it would rest those.

4) Update the firmware from the Sony storage site.

5) Go to the IDE ATA ATAP and then to the sub Secondary IDE channel device in the manager and advance tab to change devices from DMA if avail to PIO.

6) They sent me a link to update ascpi driver 471.2 from Adaptec’s site.

7) They had me reinstall just the Record Now program and it did try to recognize and burn a DVD-R but failed, it still will not recognize blank DVD +RW media (please insert blank disk). next boot it again doesn't recognizes the DVD-Rs either.

8) Lastly they had me update my Motherboard bios.

9) I am waiting on the XP service pack CD to arrive (the down load takes 12 hours in a low band width area and it had errors after it was done) and then if it still does not work I get to call back provided I get the CD in the 2 week period of support that I paid $20 for because technically my warranty ran out 2 month ago. Even though I installed the unit a month after I bought it and these problems stared about 3 months ago. I thought since it worked before that it was a software update issue and not possibly a defective unit. They tell me there is no repair for out of warranty storage product, meaning it might be trash.

Thanks
Ross
