  1. Hello,

Anyone know if you can turn off the built in firewall on a router? Or are there any ports which i should open and close? It is a Gnet IP0006

The reason I ask is because i think its causing me problems .. or its my ISP. When I surf the internet, everything is fine. But when I start downloading something, anything, my connection drops. This ONLY started after I installed the router, so that is why I think its the router.

    Thanks in advance.

I don't think so... and by default, the router should appear that you do not have a router installed other than keeping you from prying... Ports should all be open by default unless you close them..
What is it that you are trying to d/l??? Newsgroup, FTP, etc??

  3. Dont tell anyone .. but bittorrent mostly. But it happens with anything. Downloading from a website even. As soon as there is a file transfer, it just stops. Really odd

It just drops the connection all the time.

Using Bittorrent is not illegal, at least not the last time I checked (maybe the process in which you are using it could be though), but I'd say that most here would have the idea that what you are doing is not kosher as this post has been viewed quite a bit so far...
I think it is either port related or a timing issue that might need to be increase (router setup)

    From a website:

    Firewall protection

The "Always On" convenience that makes the broadband connections so popular also exposes your files to everyone else on the net. The Gnet Internet Gateway provides 2-levels of security support.

First it masks local users from others on the Internet making it very difficult for a hacker to target a computer on your network. The Gnet Gateway acts as the only recognized Internet device on your LAN, protecting all the computers on your LAN. Secondly, by blocking certain ports, it limits the access of outside users.
The actual users can open required ports to ensure proper functioning of multi-player games and other Internet applications.
The Gnet Gateway is superior to Firewall software that requires the software server to remain visible on the Internet, no local computers are directly visible from the outside when using this product.

Also are you running a Firewall that is blocking some ports??

I would go to a site like dsl reports, broadband reports.com, SpeedGuide.net. They have tools at these sites to test your modem and connection. You can also contact your ISP, but I wouldn't mention you are using a router, they don't usually approve of those. It's unlikely a router would cause dropouts,

  6. makntraks: I know its not illegal but i know most people here dont like it. Dont know why but none of my business.

Interesting info on the router. Thanks dude. As for another firewall, i dont have installed rigth now but I have one. Norton Internet securities. I was just wondering if the router was the problem and if it was, i would use norton. But that doesnt seem to be the problem

Redwuds: Thanks. i tried dslreports and it didnt work. My java apparantly is configured right or something. I am going to try my isp. They dont like routers so I will disconnect it while i am talking to them.

Thanks to you both for the help.

  7. If you do find out how to open ports, bitTorrent defaults are teh TCP range 6881-6999.

Remember, open them on your software fw (Norton in your case) and the hardware fw (router).

I would actually stick with the router, but It is your call. Most of the routers now have ip spoofing.

most routers have an ip set the lets you get into the settings(192.0.0.0). you gotta find out what yours is. set everything up right and you shouldnt have a prob. and yes you can turn it off that way too. some firewalls have probs with certain routers. and some programs do need a set port open, usually you can set to what port you want. i would point more of the firewall if you have one.
