For all of you thinking about buying a new printer that prints photos and disks, you might want to see what they say at these links:

Also check out the forum at photo-i.

edit: the last ones are in Japanese, so unless you can read them, just avoid them

Thanks for sharing the links for this promising technology VI..!

The ultra-chrome inks may be exactly what we have been waiting for in the disc-printing realm... Interesting choice they made on the inclusion of red and blue spot colors. Should make true (undithered) orange a real possibility; and eliminate banding in vast blue sky-scapes...

Any ideas how "moisture resistant" these inks will be in disc-printing..?

Water resistance is unfortunately dependent on 2 things, the ink and the paper (media). The durabrite or ultrachrome inks are mostly waterproof, so that half should be fine. Now if the disks are good, the receiving layer will also be waterproof and all will be well. The only part of the ink that may not be waterproof is the black. Sometimes to make the black, more black, they will mix in some black dye. The dye portion will of course run when wet. Epson has 2 different black carts for most of these printers. One is the photo black, and one is the matte black, but I don't remember which one has the dye and which does not.

Some media (some glossy papers especially) will not have a waterproof ink receiving layer, and when you get them wet, the coating will slide off, bringing the ink with it. The Memorex CDRs seem to possibly fall into the category. The coating gets very soft when you run it under water, so it is possible that they will still smudge when wet.

I guess the fade-resistance/ozone color-shift outta be enough; it's probably too much to expect water resistance as well. I guess I will continue with the Epson 900 and UV spray combo. I'm still trying to rig an effective masking jig to speed/ease the process. That Krylon is _very_ invasive and has defeated my first 2 jig attempts...

    Thanks for the feedback VI...!

I just finished reading the complete review of this R800. This is going to be a NICE printer. Now if it only offered a postscript option and inexpensive RIP software it would be close to perfect for color printing. The addition of 2 or 3 more shades of black ink would then make it complete. But you have to ask, how many ink carts do you really want in your printer at one time. The printhead looks like it is about 4+ inches wide now, that makes the printer very large.

I have an ALPS MD1300 thermal printer, so I'm no stranger to cartridge swapping, but yeah...8 different carts to buy is more than enough for my budget...lol I will be very curious to see what they and the printer retail out for...
