  1. I know it isn’t a problem to transfer from DVD-RAM to the hard drive, but when I tried it with DVD-R it wouldn’t do it. The manual doesn’t seem to be too clear about it.
Is it possible? I’m not talking about copy protected DVDs, but DVD that was recorded on E-80 to DVD-R, but now I need to copy it back to the hard drive. Thanks!

  3. Huh? I was asking about Panasonic E-80

  4. Yes, you can run another dvd player to the inputs...or even easier...i've been told you can simply run a line out of the E80 to the line in of the same E80 and it works.

I know what mean.....a few of us here think along the line....of Standalone but this forum covers ALL DVD Recorders.
Should there be a separate forum?

No you can't do that. I believe manual is very clear about that. No dubbing from DVD-R to recorders HDD. On the other hand... Pioneer can do that :P

Yes....you can do that, and I have done it. You can play another dvd player into the inputs, just like a vcr, and record to the HDD. I have also seen confirmation that you can play a dvd-r in the Panasonic, run the line out to the line in as a loop, and record to the HDD. The manual is referring to copyrighted dvds.

Well.... you are right and at the same time you are wrong.

Yes you can do what you are saying... You can connect any non-protected video source through external connectors and record it to Panasonic. Even DVD Player.

No you can not place DVD-R into Panasonic itself and "copy" (copy.. not re-encode) material to HDD like you can do with DVD-RAM. This is what manual is refering to. Pioneer can (some special requirements for "non loss copy"="high speed" and "re-encode" is always an option)

  9. by making use of the machines simultaneous record and play capability, you can simply connect one set of outputs on the recorders back to its own inputs. select the correct input (hint: in will look as if the screen is melting, but dont be worried about that). first, select the HDD side and press record, then select the DVD side and play the material. you can make use of the dmr's great editing features by trimmimg any beginnig or end excess you see fit. i have permanentley wired my recorder this way, it is very useful. its even better when you utilize FR for material that is less than two hours, etc.

I'm ok with re-encode, but how?
When I placed DVD-R in the Panasonic itself and hit DVD play it plays, but in order to re-encode I need to switch to HDD and when I do that DVD stops playing. How do I re-encode from DVD-R to HDD? Thanks!

That is interesting...do I connect loop video out to video in and then what are the steps to record from DVD-R to HDD? Thanks!

I said that it can be done on Pioneer, not on Panasonic. Try what the other guys are saying.

When your connecting the output cables to the input, does the mechine change the signel from digital, to analog, back to digital? Basicly does the mechine convert to analog for playback? If so there might be some loss of quality. With a rip to HD there is no loos.
    Thanks Mike.

  14. I do it and here's how: You're going to run your audio/video outs to your audio/video in on the Panny, yes, into itself. Hit record on the hard drive, while it is recording, switch over to the DVD player in the unit and hit play, this works and I do it when I have something on DVD that I want to edit - so don't tell me it doesn't Don Pedro! Hey, did you save up enough from your allowance for a recorder yet? :P

You are not listening what I am saying. You can not COPY from DVD-R to HDD directly without re-encoding as you can from DVD-RAM.

From DVD-RAM you can copy 1 hour video in XP mode (let's estimate speed) in 15 minutes. High-Speed. What it does is, that data are copied like in PC from one medium to another. Without re-encoding.

This can't be done with DVD-R.

What you are doing is different. I hope I made myself clear.

    Mr. Satellite,

Indeed, what you describe is not "dubbing," as the very title of this message was requesting information about. You are simply "recording video," just like you would be doing if you hooked up a separate DVD player to the E80H and started recording video played from it.

"Dubbing" refers to going into the E80H's "Functions" menu, then selecting the "Dubbing" feature.

Also, unless you're actually doing "high speed" dubbing, you are "re-encoding" the video signal, even if you're "dubbing." Generally, when folks are talking about this kind of "dubbing" back and forth between discs and the hard drive, they're usually wanting to get the "lossless" kind of transfer from one medium to the other without re-encoding the video.

The story remains that you cannot perform a "dubbing" operation from DVD-R to the HDD in the E80H, like you can with a DVD-RAM disc. Sure, you can do a "work-around" like you mention, but nobody would consider that "dubbing."

    Give it a rest. Please.

  17. Indeed, the title states dubbing and led to one forum user asking how it can be done, even if it was not lossless, that is what I was responding to. Read the entire thread before you wave your magic wand.

Connecting out into in on the player, then pressing record on HDD and play on DVD. It record DVD-R on the HDD just like if Panasonic was connected to another DVD player or recording from a TV channel. It isn’t dubbing like it’s possible to do from DVD-RAM, but works for me for now.

    Captain,

With some guys determining the utter uselessness of the E80H (usually in comparison to the Pioneer units) because of the lack of a "dubbing" capability from DVD-R to HDD, I just wanted to make sure we were all abundantly clear on what we were calling "dubbing!"
