  1. Hi

Wow - heres a problem to solve or advise me on
    Yes! Another nuisance newbie

All this dvd stuff means I need a bigger hard drive and
other upgrades - the drive being more important

Unfortunately I can only afford to upgrade in stages

I am informed that my Motherboard / Bios setup permits hdd
maximum size 0f 65gb in format

If I were to buy a larger drive exceeding 65gb to help out in
    future upgrades

Would it format at 65gb 'OR' would it not format at all

    please advise

  2. What Motherboard do u have?? and what Operationg sytem do you have?

You might be able to get a BIOS update to support larger drives. You could always partition the larger drive into sizes smaller than 65g limit

  3. Hi Smokey

    You're looking good

SUPERMICRO with NEWEST BIOS UPGRADE - LIMIT to 65GB
    WINDOWS 98SE

Will Fdisk ID the Larger HD thus Allowing me to Partition it
    in 60 gb sections

Oh I forgot - Many thanx for the quick response

Yes an No. FDISK is horrible with large Hard Drives over about 80gig. You can get a 120gig and only "see" 80-90gig using FDISK if your lucky. Use the software that comes with the Hard drive. Just follow the instructions and you'll be alright. You might want to upgrade from 98SE too as it will only handle 100gig drives itself unless you partition

    Ancient,

Are you running 98SE? You mention it.

There is a Large Disk Support supplement to the 98SE boot disk that "sees" drives larger than 64 gig. The original fdisk would see an 80 gig as a 16, 80 - 64.

Go to MS and DL a file named 263044USA8, 175 KB, or I can mail it to you.

It replaces the fdisk on your present boot disk to recognize larger than 64 gig drives. Actually, it is a new Command.com file, dated 1999, well after the launch of Win98, which was dated May 98. The new file was a year in the making, April, 99.

    Cheers,

    George

    Smokey,

Actually, it will see larger than 100 gig drives, but there is still a glitch.

A large drive will only show, in fdisk as, say, 17000 MB, for a 120 gig, till you use up enough of the drive to get below 100 gig, then it shows you the true balance. It only shows 5 digits, as above 17000, insread of 117000 MB for a 120 gig drive.

Had me pulling my hair out for a while, continued, finally, what the hell, you can always do it over, and when it got to less than 100 gig, all was well.

    Cheers,

    George
