I have a Panasonic E50 and am making dupes of home videos from my new Sony Handycam 8mm analog tapes. I am connecting the video thru a Monster S-video cable. I am recording on 2 hour mode using Maxell japanese media. I am wondering if standard AV cables would give a better picture? The picture is a bit blocky and shimmery at times, nothing to complain about but if it could be better then I'd like to know. Is there any way to get the picture to look just like analog with no pixelation on 2 hour mode, or is that just the way it is with DVDs? Thanks

I have never known a standard (composite) video cable to beat an s-video one. If you're seeing blockiness, it can't be due to analog cables - it's a *digital* artifact indicating too low a bitrate. In my opinion, the only mode on DVD recorders that resembles looking like analog video is the XP (1-hour) mode.

Isn't there some kind of setup that you can change to "tune-up" a little recording ??? Try manual.
Pinnacle Studio 8 and DV home video editing (ver.9 already home) -
Switching between S-Video and composite to connect my VCR to my ASUS 9180 VIVO card, I can't see any real difference between the two. I tend to belive S-Video is better (perhaps for higher quality sources than home recorded VHS - such as connecting DVD Out to a projector).
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.
