If you can connect the dvd player with HD component cable(s) use them instead. S video is not as good as component.

Quality...from worst to best: composite (yellow RCA), coax, S-Video, component (Red/Green/Blue RCA), DVI/HDMI

To save a bit of time here, perhaps you could tell us a few things about your HDTV:

    1) What type it is (Plasma, LCD, Laser, etc)...
    2) What kind of connectors are present on the back...
    3) What kind of connectors are available on your DVD player...

By standard, I assume you mean it is a standard-definition player, so component is probably the best way to go. S-video is an acceptable compromise, but a lot of DVD players will only output a "progressive" signal through component. So if you can use component, then do so.

Do not bother with composite (single yellow cable). You are wasting your superior TV's capabilities if you do so.

  6. Use Component and progressive scan. If the player doesn't have progressive, get one that does. For best picture quality, get a decent player not a bottom of the line cheapie.

  7. Thanks to all for the very helpful info. The 32" LCD HDTV, 720p, is a Sony Bravia. I connected the DVD player via component cables and the picture is great!

  8. Turn on progressive scan if the player has it. Almost all players manufactered in the last few years have progressive.
