  1. Anyone have this problem? I keep getting this error notice a few minutes into every burn:

    "The drive reported an error
    Sense key=hardware error
    Sense code=0x08, 0x01
    Logical unit communication time out"

    I'm running a beige G3/300, upgraded to G4/500
    OS 10.2.8
    Pioneer 106 DVD-R drive
    Toast 6.0.3

Anyone have a solution? I've seen this problem referenced before, but not in any Mac forum.

If you have this drive installed internally in your Beige G3 try connecting it to the other ATA bus.

  3. Frobozz, sorry for the blank stare, but where and how specifically would I do that?

Incidentally, a related problem: the drive seems to choke when it needs to transfer large blocks of data. I tried to reinstall my system software with this drive, but it stalled halfway. I had to reinstall my old DVD-ROM drive, then reinstall the system software, then remove the old drive again and swap back the new Pioneer 106. Very frustrating.

I do have the Pioneer set for "master."

The cable that connects your DVD drive is plugged into one of two ATA sockets on the logic board. When I said to try the other ATA bus I meant to plug this cable into the other logic board socket.

Do you have another device connected to the same cable as your Pioneer drive? If so, one needs to be master and the other slave. You should be fine having the same setting as the drive you removed. It sounds like you already took care of this.

  5. Thanks Frobozz, I'll try that.

I subsequently got another, different error trying a Toast burn:

    "The drive reported an error.
    Sense key=illegal request
    Sense code=0x21, 0x02
    SUFFER UNDERRUN."

I do have "Buffer underrun prevention" checked in Toast.
