  1. I have an mpeg file called myvideo-SVCD1.mpg
    I am trying to make a Video-CD on a 650 MB CD-RW.

    The file itself is 513,155KB.
    When I try to copy the file to the compiliation I get a message:

    Due to patent license restrictions, MPEG-2 encoding/decoding/playback is
    not available. This feature can be added by installing the DVD-Video
    Plug-in.

    Sounds to me like I'm missing an MPEG codec. Is there a free on I can use?

    Would I have this problem if I were to try burning to a DVD instead of a
    Video-CD.
    I would try the Super Video CD but I think my DVD player (a Panasonic RP56)
    won't play Suber Video CD unless I do some multiplexing hack that I don't
    understand. (This according to dvdrhelp.com)

    So what are my options here?

    The problem is that Judging by the name of your movie you have an mpeg-2 SVCD file. The second problem is that you are trying to burn a VCD which is mpeg-1. Nero is giving you the error as you know because you don't have the DVD codec installed which it needs to decode your SVCD mpeg and convert to VCD. Instead of trying to burn a VCD, do SVCD instead. That way Nero doesn't have to do any encoding. Now if you have your heart set on creating a VCD with your file you better use a seperate encoding program to convert it before you try burning. One such program is TMPGenc.

  3. Ok I will try the codec you recommended.
    Interestingly enough Nero Showtime plays this file. Which suggest that it is able atleast to decode the file... Perhaps its not able to encode it...

    However do you think you can explain to me the suggested hack that is posted here. The hack is discussed in the DVD Players Comments for a Panasonic RP56.

    Also my CD burner is capable of burning up to 650MB. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Super Video-CD take a 700MB ready CD burner?

    I assume there is also a route to take this file and burn it to a DVD.

    What makes you so sure that your burner can only handle 650mb? Before you worry about any hacks or extra software, try burning your movie in Nero as SVCD. It should fit fine.

  5. Ok I burnt it as SVCD and the quality was excellent, but the video was jerky and unusable...

    So I did the multiplexing trick with TMPGenc.
    And I'm going to burn as we speak....

    However there is this last part of the posting I don't understand....
    ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
    Now for the green...pixelation[?]...flashing and cutting off the bottom portion of the screen. The problem is the video standard. There are two types: PAL & NTCS. PAL is a European standard, and unfortunately this player does not support it properly. Using TMPGencoder, you need to re-encode the file into an NTSC standard sVCD, then multiplex as normal.
    ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

    How do I do this?

    The posting basicaly states that you have to use the video standard(NTSC or PAL) that your country uses. US uses NTSC and UK and Europe use PAL. I don't know what country you are in but I am guessing that your file is of the correct video standard. I believe Nero would have reported a compliance error otherwise.

  7. Ya, nero did complain about non compliance but I turned it off as the poster suggested.... I didn't end up with and 'green' stuff on my screen so I guess we can skip that....

    Ok so the hack works but the audio video are still jerky... Much better but jerky....

    So I read a few more posts on the subject and they are discussing modifying the bit rates and image dimensions... I tried modifying the 'settings' of TMPGEnc to 720x480 2500 BR but I don't think that setting button modifies anything when you use the file/mpeg-tools.

    Ok, I think we've established that your file uses the correct video system but the fact that you got the compliance error tells me that there is a seperate problem. Either the bitrate, audio, or frames per second are wrong.

    Also, did you try playing the SVCD disc on your PC? If it plays fine then the problem could be that your DVD player simply doesn't like SVCD's. And attempting to resize your file would be a bad idea and a waste of time. You are correct about these settings not being applicable to MPEG Tools, as changing any variables in the video would involve re-encoding the entire file.
