Like the subject says, every disc I author tends to have trouble when jumping around on the disc. An example would be selecting chapter 9 (of 12) then pressing the menu button after one minute of play and the player tries to return to the menu but nothing happens, black screen, seems to freeze requiring a full powering down to get operational again. Another example of a minor annoyance: pressing the chapter skip button works sometimes but other times I get the disc prohibited symbol (this will happen on the same disc during the same chapter).

I usually use Tmpgenc DVD Author or DVD Impressions Pro to do my authoring and Record Now Max or the internal writing tools of each authoring software. I am willing to live with these annoyances but am wondering what is causing it. I guess it could be my primary player (a panasonic cp-70k) or it could be that consumer level authoring software "does not do a very good job", or it could be the media (seems unlikely as it happens with multiple brands, and formats).

What ever the reason my homemade dvds will choke my player if I tax it too much. Anyone have ideas on the causes of these problems? Anyone else experience similar problems? Thanks for any input.

  2. if you can, try a cuppla of those disks in other set top players.
reading your post seems to point in that direction and could be your player is acting up after warming up - or possibly your player's remote has weak batteires ?

Skipping or going blank and resetting like that suggest the dvd player has a hard time reading the dvd and could be cheap media.

Thanks for the replies. I agree that it seems as though the players I have tried them in have a difficult time reading the disc. Perhaps this is why the panasonic is only officially capable of reading +R and +RW. For further information the media I have used:

    DVD-R
    Lead Data
    RITEKG04

    DVD+R
    MCC 001 (sold as HP)

    DVD+RW
    RICOHJPNW01 (sold as Fujifilm)
    PHILIPS 001
RICOHJPNW01 (sold as Sony - came with burner)

    Players tested (with these annoyances)
    Panasonic Cp-72K
    Cyberhome 712 (portable player)

    Thanks for any additional insight.
