Burner writes at 4X, but wont read faster than 1X

I received a Pacific Digital Dual format 4X DVD Burner for Christmas. It's supposed to read DVDs at 12X speed and write at 4X speed. I initially had only USB 1.0 support on my computer and would only read and write at about 0.5X, so I bought a belkin PCI USB 2.0 card and installed it.

The burner now writes at 4X, but will still only read at about 0.9 to 1.2X speed. I'm using DVD decrypter and/or DVD shrink to read my movies, so it takes 1.5 to 2 hours per movie to read.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what could be going on here? Do I have to change settings in DVDdecrypter/DVD shrink or something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. And, I'm a newbie, so make sure to dumb down any explanation/solution you might have

It is likely that the ripping speed is locked for your drive, this is common with a lot of drives particularly burners. Your best option would be to buy a cheap DVD-ROM that is not locked for ripping discs, I believe that lite-on is a popular choice but I dont know the model off the top of my head, try searching the forum. Getting a seperat ripping drive will also reduce wear and tear on your burner.

Like I said, I'm a newbie, so I apoligize if these questions sound stupid. The box and manual say its supposed to read DVD at 12X. I just don't understand why it wouldn't read it at 12X then?

What's the difference between ripping and reading? What do you mean that the ripping speed is locked? Do you mean that something is wrong with my burner?

Again, sorry for all the questions. I'm just confused... I've searched EVERYWHERE for answers. Even Pacific Digital doesn't know what's up.

After asking on newsgroups, and on here, I decided to take out the 24x speed cd-burner rather than the dvd-rom drive to install my Pioneer A06. The deciding factor was just as was mentioned here.....dvd ripping speed. Sure I lose some cd burning speed, going down to 16x instead, but that is not such a bad price to pay since it means only losing a few minutes, as opposed to many many minutes lost on ripping time.

My LaCie DVD dual-format burner (which is actually a Pioneer DVR-106D) is supposed to read DVDs at 12x also, but I believe that the 12x figure is referencing the speed at which it can read a data DVD, as opposed to a DVD-Video. My drive like so many others maxes out at aobut 2.0x for ripping.
