hi been ripping dvds for a while now, but ive just encountered this problem, i've got this dvd which plays fine in a standalone player, but locks up my pc when tryin to play it on that......., so try to rip it anyway, dvd decrypter rips 57% then encounters a read error sector can't be read, smart ripper gets a bit further ( 80 somthing percent ) then gives error sector can't be read, and because there was no encryption key on the dvd i used isobuster.........same again gets so far then can't read sectors tried to ignore but there were to many to get through and when i ticked ignore all it locked up . Anybody got any ideas on this one ? as i said before it plays ok on the standalone............thanks in advance

Perhaps your Samsung DVD-ROM drive's laser has become dirty. Try googling for "{your DVD-ROM model number} cleaning" and see if you can find any instructions on manually maintaining/cleaning your drive.
The fact that it's playing in your standalone player and not in your computer makes me believe that it's a drive issue rather than a media issue.
Good luck!I only dream in black & white...

Try giving the disc a thorough clean, sometimes even though it looks clean it is not.

hi and thanks for answering, but i tried all of the above and still nothing. I tried a few other dvds and they play+rip fine, so i came up with this thought, all the other dvds i own, play+rip fine cause i got them from a reputable source ( shop, wrapper, security strip the works ), this particular one , came from a friend ( hence why i would like to make a copy ) , now i don't know where he got it from , but is it possible he was sold a monkey ( if it is, its very convincing ) and if so would this produce this type of problem. Is there a way to determine a pirate disc from the original, apart from the obvious checking of the cover and disc which as i said look absolutly fine and very professional..........sorry for the long winded explanation, but when my mind starts thinking.........it scares me a bit......thanks again

Sorry forgot to mention that the copy is of course for my friend as a back up and not of course for me

What colour is the base of the disc.
-
hardcoreruss just had a look at the base and its silver, but i had a look at my other discs to compare and they have a seriel code and also what looks to be some sort of barcode on the inner part of the silver base, where as the disc in Q has not, what do you think?

I've also encountered disks that are unreadable like this before, sadly I dont think it's all that uncommon. It can be a small scratch or it can be deterioration of the dye if it's a burnt DVD.
For some reason stand alone players seem better able to cope with a brief unreadible parts of the DVD, you sometimes get only a small glitch, pause or skip (perhaps barely noticable) with a standalone player on a bad disk whereas that same disk may cause a computer that is trying to do exact digital extraction to go completely bannanas.
You get similar issues with ordinary audio CD's, often a standalone CD player will handle badly sratched CD's quite well whereas it can totally mess up when a computer is trying to do DAE (digital audio extraction).
Remember that DVD's are much more sensitive to scratches and other damage than are CD's. Also remember to store burnt media well away from direct sunlight. -
thanks for your time guys , this would seem to be the case with this one.

I had a similar situation with a samsung I use at work. SM-308B model would go to a certain % on two disks and then stop. All others were fine. I finally found a firmware update, after checking my ASPI layers. Once I installed that it was fine, but I never did get a clear explanation why it was just those two disks.
