Has anyone backed up the REGION 1, NTSC movie "Crime Spree"..either the full disk or Widescreen version? I bought the movie a couple of weeks ago from Best Buy...as I was watching the WideScreen version..I noticed at the last few minutes of the movie..my player completely froze and then jumped a few seconds later to the ending credits. I had never seen that EVER on a commercial disk that was "BRAND NEW" so I thought there was some hair on the disk..I took it out but it looked perfect. So I tried to play it in my DVD ROM and the SAME, EXACT THING happened.
I thought that was odd..so I tried to rip the widescreen vobs which are in the VTS_04 set. But sure enough..I could NOT rip the problem vob which is the last vob in the set. I tried my Maxell disk solution which almost always works on "small" scratches..although there were apparently none on this brand new disk I tried it anyway...and got the same result. So I put the disk in my "disk doctor" repair kit which is really a miracle worker..it can get damn near any scratched disk to play or rip..so at $30 it's a great deal. But even that didn't work on Crime Spree.....so I just exchanged it at Best Buy...no problems at all....or SO I THOUGHT.
I went to rip the problem VOB on my second BRAND NEW disk and the SAME EXACT THING OCCURED. EXACTLY at the 75% mark the DVD ROM just errors out. Now this is the SECOND BRAND NEW disk and it errors out at the SAME EXACT POINT. There's obviously something defective with either this particular title in general or at least..the batch that this Best Buy got. Has ANYONE else backed up a Region 1, NTSC version of Crime Spree full disk or WIDESCREEN VERSION?
Because the problem is at the very end of the "Widescreen" version of the movie..and because there's another PERFECTLY fine version in the fullscreen set....I'll keep the disk..but this is definitely unusual.
If anyone else has this movie can you check and see if you can rip the last vob...VTS_04_4? That's the one that TWICE on two BRAND NEW disks completely locks up at 75%. .....Seems like it could be a mass problem.

Nothing is ever perfect. maybe the dvd is faulty. in this situation, i recommend you take the dvd back to the store where you purchased it and get it exchanged for another one or get a refund.

I've got two DVD's here that do not play in my standalone player. 2 copies of John Farnham - One Voice - Greatest Video Clips. One gets to the "copy warning" and freezes.....the latest one won't even get THAT far. It is a dual layer 7.74gig all region PAL DVD. Neither will play(I'm in PAL land).
My backup works fine(no menus or extras and SHRUNK)...plays fine in ONE of my computers DVD drives....chokes in the other.
This DVD so far is quite a nightmare.....but they DO exist out there. -
i had a similar problem with the region 2 pal version of "a knights tale" where the menus would play, but every time you hit an option, the menus would restart and the film would not play, and when i tried to rip it to see if i could make a backup copy that would work, i could not it kept giving me random errors

yea, I have actually experienced similar before with two disks that were in PERFECT condition but they wouldn't play. They were obviously a case of DVD ROT or something similar. One was the movie "CASINO" AND the other was "SPARTICUS"....neither of them would even load...not in ANY DVD PLAYER OR DVD ROM. It was like the disks were completely erased. Not a single scratch on either. Sparticus was perfect for a long time and Casino was UNOPENED. When I finally opened it a year or so after owning it...it wounld't load either. NOt a single scratch or ANYTHING physically wrong with it. These things arent' a good sign for DVD owners. We'll see what happens in the next 5-8 years for owners of DUAL LAYER DVD's...because both of those disks were dual layer. And the two disks I mentioned were purchased at different places at completely different times.
Now as far as this "CRIME SPREE" goes...it's got to be a mass produced problem...I can't see getting two BRAND NEW disks and having them have an errors at the EXACT same spot. Getting a third replacement disk would be a waste of time. That's why I posted this..to see if anyone else has this movie and can rip the VTS_04_4 vob...but my guess is they won't be able to. At least not with the Region 1, NTSC version.
If it is a mass produced defect...the thing that's the most messed up is the studio almost definitely knows about it..because the defect is at the VERY END of the Widescreen version..where my "Philips" player just skips over the bad part and plays the last minute..my Rom goes to the ending credits....but I'm figuring they said screw it....it's at the very end of the movie....who cares...they can watch the full screen version. lol.....oh well...shit happens...no big thing...I won't even bother to back this disk up...
but if ANYONE does get this movie and CAN rip the VTS_04_4 vob....it would be good to know that maybe just a bad batch got sent out as opposed to a total mass defect.
