  1. Hi all,

As this is the obvious route for me, am wondering if the likes of Lord smurf can give me some pointers as to which one ?

Some of the models mentioned on Lord smurf's website are obsolete so ive been surfing and found models ranging from £170 - £750 !

    Any ideas

  4. Just ordered a JVC HR-S8965EK.
Not only was it cheaper than the panny, it allows *all* special functions to be turned on or off.
The panny looked great until they told me the tbc could not be turned off !

Thanks again to LS for that tip.

For anyone else also following this,

The Panasonic NV HS 960 has a TBC that can be enabled or disabled. It also has a 3D NR. Don't know exactly what it stands for, but activating it improves video quality of tapes even recorded on another machine.

Additionally, it has a very good complement of scart/ Svideo and composite imputs and outputs, both front and back, which is very handy for the kind of work I do with it.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

The JVC line is a good one. The JVC SR-V10U is decent too (a rebadged 7900). I have a JVC 9800 and some lesser models. The 7000 and 9000 series are the best, the 8000 series is new and I'm not all that familiar with it (but I'd assume it be up there in quality).

Yes, very important that you can ALWAYS turn features ON or OFF. They can hurt a signal just as much as they can help. This was on of my primary greivances against Mitsubishi, Panasonic and a few others.

S-VHS-ET mode is always nice to have too (SVHS recording on high-grade VHS tapes works quite well, at less than ¼ the price). All JVC have this.

I'm giving my 9800 the workout of it's life this week. Using and abusing my new DVD recorder. So far, so good!

I recently aquired a JVC 7600U; what a gem! I also have a DataVideo TBC-3000 and the JVC TBC removes horizontal jitter that the DataVideo does not. So I use them both; the JVC for best horizontal correction, and the DataVideo for its Full Frame window which guarantees uninterrupted sync to my capture card. I was at first skeptical, but am now amazed at how good the built it JVC TBC is!

  8. The NV HS 960 is discontinued, which is why I didnt buy it. The 3d nr is dolby 3d noise reduction probably similar to the JVC one.

A lot of models mentioned are discontinued and im not brave enough to get a second hand one with possibly knackered heads.
Will let you know how I get on with the JVC. Also looking at the Datavideo range..............nice !

  9. I use the JVC SR-V10U VCR to record to my Panasonic E50 through this TBC ( http://www.avtoolbox.com/avt-8710.htm ). I then playback the resulting DVDR with my Bravo DVI enabled DVD player http://www.vinc.com/product.asp?id=31&PID=21 at 720p and the picture quality is better than the source tape.

I am guessing that you recommend this TBC? I am looking for one and have been thinking about this particular one. I have also been trawling eBay but most of the units there are untested.

Well it does work great and is for the most part a passive device that I don't have to be messing with adjusting all the time.

Does the JVC SR-V10U need an external TBC, I thought it had one built in.
I was interested in the V10U, and just interested if it's TBC doesn't do a good job?

Me too... Looks like a number of these are euro only models... I guess the SCART connector is a give-away.

I can answer this. No, an external is not needed. The SR-V10U has a built-in like the 7900 (same VCR pretty much). As to why you should use two at once, look over my TBC/VCR guide at www.lordsmurf.com

  16. Thats a great guide... I have been pondering this for some time and have actually considered building one (I soon abandoned that idea when I looked into it some more). I almost exclusively work with DV and so most of this is foreign to me.

    Thanks!!

  17. So what do I think of my new JVC tbc svhs ?

    EXCELLENT !!!

On default settings straight out of the box too !
Using the separate svhs 'out' port on the back, want to steer clear of scart if I can.

Yes its a euro only model, which is why I couldnt find any of the others mentioned in this thread - u.s. only models.

Now going to surf ebay for a decent datavideo tbc unit so that I can get the cleanest possible signal.
A huge thankyou to Lord Smurf and his website, a paypal donation is on its way matey.

    Cheers
