  1. Hi, I was wondering whether the noise filters on some programs like VDub works to filter out noise that occurs because of the capturing process or does it filters the noise from the captured vhs.
Because i'm trying to digitize this one vhs but when i play it on the vcr, I get very loud static like noise during parts of the video. And I need to know whats the best way to do this and get rid of the noise as much as possible. Any suggestions would be appreciated because this tape is very important to me, thnx

  2. First clean the tape, then clean your VCR, use gold cables to connect. Then run some filters like SmartSmootherHiQ, and some temprol smoothers (VDub). Convolution3D for AVISynth is very good.

Donald Graft http://neuron2.net/index.html, is one of the best filter programers, and many people use his filters.

  3. Will the results be the same whether i use a tv tuner or a flat out capture card, or maybe and external capturing device? And I'll have to apply these filters after I capture it, say on an avi or mpeg rather then during the capture?

The filters will work the same regardless of the device used to capture. However, the capture device can introduce its own noise and/or have its own internal filtering.

Generally you want to apply noise filters at a losseless video stage or at most a slight compression stage, e.g., dv avi. I doubt there will be much use, if possible, applying noise filters to an existing MPEG2 file.

  5. Most people cap with DV or HuffYUV. Trying to remove noise on compressed video a pain. Alot of people use the Canopus ADVC-100, because it has very little noise and internal filtering, and doesn't require an extreamly fast CPU to capture full resolution video.
