  1. my G4-867 build in superdrive is dead, all the CD or DVD i put into the machine will eject automatically. So i am thinking to buy a new machine to replace it. I saw a few reasonable priced internal DVD +/- RW in the market, but not sure will they work on my G4 or not. Is there anything i need to know for this replacement operation? Thanks!

    machine type :
    G4-867
    build-in superdrive
    running 10.3.2

From what I know you should be able to put almost any new drive in there and it will work automatically without a hitch.

pioneer's will work with NO problems
the model you have can take 2 drives actually so as long as you put the superdrive on the TOP it will have no problems being a replacement for your current drive

the 867 is an excellent machine and doesnt seem worth replacing the ENTIRE machine for just the drive... but then again its your mac

    hope this helps

    I paid $500 for my Pioneer A03
and $350 for my sony DRU 500a

Livewarehouse has the sony drives there also they have at least 10 dvd writers on that page for less than $150 just about the cheapest place I have seen without rebate

Ya but do these drives work with iDVD? The Pioneer at livewherehouse says Windows Os, nothing about Mac Os. Now Macsales has the Pioneer A06 for $147 and it comes with iDVD. Would this drive from them be safer to buy? I use an External firewire A04 with Studio Pro on every machine I have (2 G4's and 2 Powerbook's) but I can't use iDVD with it (which until Studio Pro 2, was sometimes easier to use) Any ideas?

Can hardly wait till Friday's trip to MacWorld in S.F.

Yes it will work just fine check out www.xlr8yourmac.com for compatiblity for any drive (it works as long as you install it internally.)

Macrumor had something on their page about non superdrive compatibility for external dvd writers with IDVD 4 but apple doesnt say anything about it so I think that claim is false

    http://www.apple.com/ilife/idvd/

No drive will work with IDVD externally

    Sorry
