Hi there , i got a couple xvid videos , that have an aspect ratio of something like 2.35:1 and i want to cut the sides off the clips in order to be left with a 16:9 video clip, i tried doing this in virtualdub but it messed up the movie and gave me a 4:3 output and chopped nothing off at all. I am hoping that this process wont take too long as there is not much re-encoding involved right?
Thankyou very much for your help , JAMIE

You just need to use the cropping option in VirtualDub, but you will have to re-encode the video, since you are changing the video information by cutting the sides off.
Load the file in Vdub and select video -> filters -> Add, and select the 'Null Transform' filter.
While still on the filters window click on the 'Cropping ..' option.
Now adjust the X1 and X2 offsets until you have your 16:9 ratio and press OK, press OK again on the filters window.
Now select Video -> Compression and select the XVID codec and set it to the same bit rate as the orginal (a tool like AVICodec will tell you this).
Now just use 'Save as AVI' to create the new 16:9 version. -
Thanks dude , works perfectley , whey better now , cos now its like bigger and it fits my tele better. Why on earth do they do movies in 1.35:1? cos no one has that kinda tele do they?. I get an encoding time of about a hour with my amd 1600+ with 512 ram commie if anybody else wants to try this out
