  1. I am converting home movies to DVD and want to add some clips from other DVDs I have, intros, disclaimers and such. What should I use to convert the VOBs. I am using Shrink to pull the VOBs off the DVD.

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks in advance

  2. VobEdit cam demux the video and audio streams to your harddrive and then all you have to do is multiplex them with something like TMPGEnc.

    Hope this helps.

  4. There is really a much simpler way, needing no other software than Windows Explorer.

If you rename a .VOB file to have the extension .MPG instead of .VOB, it will play in any software that plays .MPGs.

No conversion necessary, just change of extension.

You mentioned single VOBs, so that's all you would have to do, to change a VOB to an MPG.

Of course, a whole ripped DVD movie will have multiple VOBs. So, to create one MPEG movie from a ripped DVD, you would have to rename each of the VOBs to MPG, and use a software program to combine the separate MPGs into one.

The only problem I've found with this is subtitles. If it's a foreign language film with subtitles, they will not appear in the renamed VOB-->MPG movies. Anyone know how to get the subtitles back in?

  5. A VOB is nothing but elementary video + audio strreams multiplexed together into a single file. To extract 'em you can use any app that demuxes MPEG-2 files and understands what a VOB is -- viz., TMPGEnc, select MPEG TOOLS -> De-Multiplex, enter *.VOB and hit return.
In order to *edit* these elementary MPEG-2 streams, however, you'll need a video editor capable of dealing directly with MPEG-2 files without incredibly lengthy transcoding or re-encoding. THere exist only a handful fo such apps: M2 Edit Pro and Womble MPEG VCR being the most notable. I'd recommend Womble, since it's cheap ($100) and very very fast and extremely high-quality.

  6. Don't get me wrong. All I want is to convert a single 20 sec long opening from a movie. I will then add this to my home movies captured with a ADC-100 device.

I have used DVD2AVI to make a *.d2v and a *.wav file. I then used TMPGEnc to convert to a *.MPG file.

Some of the other programs I have tried leave me with no sound, long re-encoding times, poor quality, and more.

After all is said and done I will combine the finished file to the front of a home video and then author a DVD.

I was just wanting a easier way with less steps.

    Thanks

  7. Bill, as I already wrote, there is a MUCH easier way than anything you have tried (or what some have suggested), if you know which VOB you want, and there are no subtitles in it.

Just change the filename extension from .VOB to .MPG, and should be able to add this to your movie with no problem.

Let us know how it works out.

  8. Have a similar question. Am using dvd decryptor to create VOB. Then DVD-to-AVI to create *.avi files.
When I bring into premiere 6.5 to edit I get no sound.
All I'm trying to do is to create an .avi file I can pull into premiere and edit with a seperate video and audio track.
    What step/software am I missing?
    thanks

  9. I have it working now. I had tried to change the VOB file to a MPG format by changing the file extension but would get no sound. I figured out I needed to install the AC3 codec and some video codec for Media player. Thanks for the help. Much easier than ripping and converting.
