I just read that the NEC 2500 is speed limited to 5X when reading DVD-Video discs. The read speed test at cdfreaks.com show it as being the slowest in their chart. Does that mean it is going to be slow also when reading movies?
What is the difference between DVD-Video and regular DVD movies.
I am a total newbie.

DVD movies are DVD-videos.
Read speed depends on the disk type (e.g. single or dual layer, pressed or DVD+R/-R/+RW/-RW)....
The read speed won't affect movie playback as it only needs to be 1x it's more data transfer or movie ripping.
Using a dedicated DVD-ROM is probably a better long term strategy - prevents undue wear on your writer. -
Yes, there is firmware that uncaps the rip speed. Read more on this post:
