I'm new to conversion would like to try TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 to convert avi to mpeg2. The footage is about 2 hours long and I'd like to get highest quality over two disks to retain highest quality if possible. Can anyone recommend any settings and is there a burner that will prompt for disk change once the first is full?

Search in the tools section (above) for TMPGEnc Plus 2.5 and it will show you all the articles written for this program. There should be a few that relate to encoding settings.

If you are willing, avoid TmpgEnc Plus 2.5. I have used it for the past year and have had so many problems. 3:2 pulldown issues, bad multiplexing, and poorly converted audio+video are a few issues. About 50% of all files were encoded right the first time. But now 100% success on all projects below...........
I found the much better and quicker way to do, and much simpler too. The results are surprisingly consistent and as long as you understand codecs and their effect on playability of your media files then you shouldn't have any issues.
Use (CCE) Cinemacraft 2.5 , FitCD , AviSynth, and BBeMpeg .
Use VirtualDub to extract a DirectStream copy of your source video without audio.
Then use FitCD to load up the source and calculate what you are trying to convert to and save it as a AVS project file.
The load the AVS file into CCE and modify any settings as required then encode the video file.
Afterwards, extract the audio from the original source using free TmpgEnc or whatever will extract to an MP2 file. There you go, you have an elementary video and audio files. Then BBMpeg to MUX the 2 together. You can set it to split the resulting file as it encodes to fit on numerous cd's.
There is a little more to learn over TmpgEnc but it's worth it because it avoids all the issues later. At least this is my experience. I have to say it's alot quicker too.
Avoid 3:2 Pulldown at all costs unless your DVD player requires it.
If you need better advice on this method go here http://www.donstevenson.net/myguides/myguides.html and read this page. It tells how to convert to DVD but the only difference is the settings will be set to SVCD if that is what you are converting to. -
Do yourself a favor and get Canopus ProCoder. I've never had to "fiddle" with config settings, simply add AVI select an output filename and convert. Picture Perfect at 29.97 720x480 every time.
It doesn't support other than mono and stereo so you will still need to exract 5.1 AC3 manually but if you're this far you're already doing anyway and it's a minor annoyance.
This is the closest I've seen to a one stop solution. -
Thanks for the info guys I'll start having a look at the utilities you've mentioned.

I have the canopus procoder and the output ALWAYS comes out upside down and reversed. (AVI to SVCD)
Any ideas?
