so what's the advantages of each? isn't wmv9 the best codec since ms invests a bunch of money into it?

It's not easy to find reviews of this codec
I found a couple of these links though:

This is a good breakdown of the wmp 9 series but it seems a bit MS biased though and only includes a minor comment on codec quality - usually in the form of much smaller than MPEG 4 and so on

This is a very short not particuarly useful one either
The only info is either - Microsoft based and therefore super,stunning and better than everything else under the sun
or
a "review" at the player shell - both of which are useless for what your looking for. -
It is not always about the quality.
