  1. Hi.

I would like to burn homemade movies onto CD-R to play on my APEX AD-1100 DVD Player.

Unfortunately I dont have a DVD Burner in my PC, only a CD-Writer.

I am a newbie at trying to burn movies onto CD.

What formats do I need to have to burn to a CD?

Can someone out there give me very very basic instructions and an idiots guide as to how to do it.

You know, he didn't say he wanted to download copyright protected movies. Maybe he wants to download independent releases from a friend's site.

Welcome to the forum. In answer to your question, if you want to watch the movies on your standalone via a cd the formats you want to burn to are vcd or svcd. Be sure your player is compatible with these formats. See if your player is listed in the dvd players list on the left under "other."
Then look under "convert" to see how to convert your movies to the format you choose. Svcd is better quality than vcd, but you may need more discs to fit the movie. Good luck.

  6. They are just standard short mpg's i wish to put onto a cd-r.

Can i not just burn the movie to a cd-r and play it in my dvd player?

Which user guide to i need to look at for mpg to cd, to play on dvd?

Sorry if i repeat myself, but this is all new to me.

  7. Sorry, since most downloaded movies are in avi format I directed you to the convert section. Use this guide for burning mpg files;https://www.videohelp.com/nero.htm.

  8. Thanks.

Problem is, I dont have Nero. I use DirectCD.

Is there a way using this cd-writing software?

    Stop.

    You said

You can't assume that. I've seen tons of 320x240 MPEG's, which aren't standard and you can't get to work reliably even on an Apex.

In the top left of your browser, check out the blue section on VCD and SVCD. It has the resoltuions and bitrates you must adhere to for a complinet disk. If your files are already MPEG1 (VCD) complient, then you can pretty much just burn them. If there not, you have to re-encode them (try CCE or TMPGEnc ) first, although it's very simple to do.

    Try VCDEasy for burning.

the point Gazorgan is trying to get at is, are your mpeg files totally compliant with either the vcd or svcd standards, in terms of their resolution, frame rate, etc?

if you want to put these on cd, you should first determine what your dvd player will play (mine will play svcd, but not vcd) and then make sure your mpeg files conform to that standard.

  12. I'll make an assumption that you have an AD-1100W. If so ...

Just BURN a DATA CD with the MPEG files. The AD-1100W supports playing of MPEG files directly -- no need to convert them to VCD or SVCD.

Give it a try -- works for me on my AD-1100W.

Now -- in order to play SVCD's, you may need to update the firmware. VCD's should be playable by default. The Nerd-out forum is a great place for Apex support and details how to determine the typoe of AD-1100W ()there are several) and how to update the firmware...

  13. More energy expanded and bandwidth blown cuz a noob can't do a search...
Apologies in advance and please forgive the brashness of the above statement..... As a 45 yo m who knew nothing 6 months ago, I've gotten to the point where I can do most any kind of basic rip/convert/author/burn.... all on my own, just by using the search function and the guides/forums so generously overflowing with all the pertanent information required to do exactly what the original poster asked....

    Sorry for the still-at-work-rant.....

  14. You should buy Nero 5.5.+ (not 6) its dirt cheap around $5 online perhaps there at ebay.com ? everytime I buy a cdwriter I get it too. It makes vcds easily.

  15. Well, i am looking to buy a new pc with cd/dvd writer on it, but it says it comes with Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD software. I dont know if this is any good or not.

As i say, i only have EasyCD and Direct CD, so will stick with those until i get the new pc.
