Think of a VOB file like a ZIP file. Generally speaking it has 1 video stream, several Audio streams and several subtitles. There are multiple VOB's for the main movie, then seperate VOB's for menu's(which include all the menu code).

It's not a great analogy, but it's pretty close to how VOB's work.

    Yes.

    Assuming:
    1) They fit? Most DVD's are DVD9's, so that won't fit on a DVDR (currently, since there are no dual layer burners yet).
    2) Commercial DVD's are encrypted. The keys to decrypting aren't in an area you can copy (there's no need really) or write to. So, you have to de-crypt before you can copy. You can do it, you just won't ever be able to play it unless you decrypt first.

That's why this site is here, it's not that easy :P

It won't work. DVD's need to have this structure in order to work:

You will have to copy all the files in order for it to work. If you do not want the menus and extras there are several programs that will re-author a DVD. However, if you want to keep the chapters you will need to rip the ifo file for the vob's that you want. (i.e. if you rip VTS_01_01.VOB to VTS_01_08.VOB you will also need to rip VTS_01_0.IFO). Programs like DVD2One and DVD Shrink will do this along with compressing the files to fit on a DVD-R.
