Current writers are 4x,which means you can write a DVD in 15 minutes. Get off the technology envy bandwagon and buy one now!
The world won't stop turning if you have a 4x drive and your neighbor has an 8x.

If the time difference between 4X and 8X recording is really important to you and you don't mind paying the higher price for media and burners, wait for the 8X. Of course if you wait long enough, 16X or something will come out. However, if you want to make DVD's cheaper and don't mind waiting a little, go for a good 4X and when it wears out in a few years, upgrade. I use a Pioneer 106 and I like it.

  5. for a little over a 100 dollars buys you a dvd burner at 4 x
15 minutes to burn 4.5 gigs isn't that bad!
It burnes at about 5 megs per second! :
    Same speed as a 48x cd-r burner!

  7. lol. thanx for the help all. the thing with 8x media not being available is...i don't care! cuz its not out yet. but when it comes out, and then gets cheaper i can start buying it. i don't mind burning at 4x for a few months or w/e. but i just wanna make sure this is a good investment.

and 8x is probably the farthest i will go with dvd writing speeds; because i hear that 4-8x is actually pushing it, and therefore to me 16x is just out the question.

so once again, anyword on a dvd writer that'll do 8x-R in the upcoming future? (hopefully wit 40x cd-r ) by a reliable company too?

  9. A recent holiday shopping trip to Fry's Electronics revealed a stock of 8x writers on the shelf at a cool 250.00+... so if you dont have the cash get the 4x just over 100 nowadays.. plus media for the 8x will be pretty hard to find and more expensive
