Spindle/cake or jewel case media. Any difference?

I wonder if there's a a noticable quality difference between the media sold on spindle/cake packs and that sold with jewel cases.
Sometimes the price varies so much between spindle and jewel case media from same brand that I think it is safer to go for the jewel case media.

any opinions or experiences?

It depends if you need the cases or not.

I deal with a Canadian supplier for my DVD-Rs.

Their quality brand (Prodisk or Ritek) are sold on spindles of 50 for $93.00
They sell jewel cases at $0.23 each.

93+(.23x50)=104.50

10 packs with Jewel cases cost $28.00

5x28=140.00

The quality is identical, but you are paying to have someone put the DVD-Rs into the jewel cases and you get the nice little cards that tell you what is in the jewel case. I don't know about you, but I print my own (when I do use a jewel case) so I through away those little insert cards.

Never found a diffrence myself in how they are packaged and the quality of the disks.
Personally prefer them in cake boxes or on spindles for ease of storage and being easily able to work out which i have burned and which i havent..

I thought that the companies could use lower quality media for spindles/cakes and high quality media for jewel cases.

Same media, unless you buy the cheap stuff.

Usually it is the generic brands that use the cheap stuff in spindles. Brand names use the same disk, the price difference is in the handling/packaging of the jewel cases, printed cards etc..
